HSBC is seeking a visionary Head of Cryptography to drive our global strategy, turbo-charge innovation, and keep millions of customers’ data secure. Your work will span the full spectrum of cryptographic services - from modernising our estate and embracing the post-quantum future, to building partnerships with industry leaders and ensuring robust regulatory compliance. What You’ll Do: Set the Strategy: Define and evolve HSBC’s global cryptography strategy, ensuring we stay ahead of emerging threats and regulatory requirements, including the post-quantum future. Deliver Results: Own the investment roadmap and oversee the delivery of cryptography initiatives across the bank, balancing risk reduction, operational needs, and strategic priorities. Drive Innovation: Foster a culture of experimentation and continuous improvement, introducing cutting-edge technologies and services to manage cyber risk. Build Partnerships: Collaborate with internal engineering teams and external technology providers to implement best-in-class cryptographic solutions. Lead Operations: Operate and mature a centralised cryptographic operations service and provide expert consulting to the business. Ensure Oversight: Maintain end-to-end visibility and robust management of cryptography across the organisation, leveraging automation and analytics. Champion Talent: Lead, inspire, and develop a global team of cryptography experts, cultivating a culture of empowerment and learning. What You’ll Bring: Deep Technical Background: Expert knowledge of Cryptography, including PKI, key management, algorithms, protocols, and attacks. Robust understanding of common industry cybersecurity frameworks, standards, and methodologies, including PCI DSS, FFIEC guidelines, CIS, and NIST standards. Strong analytical skills to identify and resolve complex problems, often with risk-risk trade-offs. The right blend of technical, seniority and delivery. Proven experience in technology leadership roles, running high-performing technology teams, delivering in large scale multi-national, and technologically diverse environments. Leadership & Mindset: Ability to learn and experiment with new approaches in challenging contexts. Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with experience influencing senior leaders. Experience managing, developing, and retaining high-performing individuals across geographies. Ability to collaborate across industry, academia, and government to solve complex problems. Risk & Controls: Knowledge and exposure to Risk and Control Management frameworks, preferably from a multi-market institution. Ability to articulate technical threats, scenarios, controls, and risks to both technical and business stakeholders. Interpersonal Skills: Influential, credible, and persuasive.
