Grade 8 English Teacher – One-Year Position

This role is a one-year fixed-term position.
Overall Purpose
The middle school English teacher is responsible for delivering an English curriculum in an engaging, stimulating, and effective manner, utilising varied instructional strategies.
Summary of Duties
-
Teaching:
- Teach four sections of Grade 8 English
- Plan, teach, and assess in close alignment with the grade-level teaching partner

Advisory Role:
- Serve as a Grade 8 advisor, building positive relationships with students and their families
- Deliver advisory curriculum
- Coach advisees in social, emotional, and academic topics
- Liaise with team teachers to support student progress and well-being

Collaboration & Curriculum:
- Collaborate with grade-level team teachers for student well-being, academic progress, and team initiatives
- Coordinate the English curriculum with other department members
- Liaise with other departments as necessary

Professional Development & Engagement:
- Apply up-to-date trends, pedagogy, research, and English education topics in the classroom
- Share knowledge with teachers at departmental and school-wide levels
- Participate in regular pedagogy meetings and professional development sessions

Student & School Support:
- Monitor and evaluate students’ progress
- Prepare for parent conferences
- Complete report cards

Safety & Learning Experiences:
- Ensure students’ safety and well-being at all times
- Organise and participate in field trips, including bonding days and a week-long trip abroad in May

- Participate actively in the School’s life by attending events, committee membership, and leading co-curricular activities

- Any other duties (including lunch and recess coverage) as required by the Middle School Principal
Selection Criteria
Essential Qualifications/Experience
- A bachelor’s degree in English or a relevant discipline
- Substantive full-time teaching experience in Middle School English
- Experience and a commitment to working collaboratively in a team-focused environment
- Experience with differentiating instruction to support diverse learning needs
- Experience as an Advisor supporting social and emotional needs of all students
- Training and experience in intercultural competency initiatives to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Significant recent professional development relevant to the position
- Commitment to and facility with technology integration in student learning
- Demonstrated knowledge of safeguarding practices and experience in supporting student welfare
Desirable Qualifications/Experience
- Experience within a standards-based curriculum
- Knowledge or experience in integrated/thematic instruction
- Experience in advisory, mentoring, or delivering social-emotional learning curricula that support adolescent well-being
