About The Role
The Role
Gateley Smithers Purslow are seeking a full-time Graduate Structural Engineer to join their growing team in Glastonbury. This is a fast-paced, varied position providing practical support to the Engineering Line Manager. The successful candidate will undertake projects within their level of authority, combining technical expertise with strong interpersonal skills.

Key Responsibilities
The Graduate Structural Engineer will be responsible for:

Technical deliverables:
- Preparing reports, calculations, structural designs and technical drawings
- Providing technical advice to clients on structural engineering solutions
- Securing planning or building regulations approvals
- Monitoring and inspecting on-site works completed by contractors
- Co-ordinating with architects and other professional stakeholders

Client relations & administration:
- Maintaining long-term client relationships through exceptional customer service
- Managing project expectations and stewarding workflows
- Administering contracts and ensuring project compliance

Online & regulatory compliance:
- Gathering evidence for and adhering to regulations such as CDM2015, Part L requirements and managing requirements for listed/period buildings
- Assessing projects for sustainability and environmental impact

Daily professional obligations:
- Complying with Gateley Smithers Purslow’s administrative, personnel and H&S procedures.

Our organisation, Gateley Smithers Purslow, operates under the Gateley Group umbrella and is a self-employed multi-disciplinary professional services firm founded in 1978. Our core practice specialises in providing technical solutions within civil and structural engineering, building surveying, cost consultancy, architecture, planning, heritage conservation, and legal professional services.
Gateley specialises in the insurance sector market, delivering expertise to public and private sector clients through teams consisting of Chartered Building Surveyors, Chartered Structural Engineers and Engineers.

The Person
Candidates should demonstrate the following core attributes:

Essential Qualifications:
- Must be a Graduate Member of either [MGEMIstructE/GMICE] (pre-QC pathways) through the Institution of Structural Engineers or ICE.

Technical readiness & academic background:
- Must hold a BSc (Hons)/MSc in Civil Engineering or related discipline with vocational qualification recognition.

Operational expertise:
- Working knowledge of engineering, architectural & planning practices, including understanding of building regulations, planning policies and statutory requirements.

Professional attributes:
- Experience in delivering projects within deadlines and budgets
- Strong problem-solving and methodical thinking skills & well-developed architectural project management ability
- Proficient in sound mathematics, scientific aptitude, and IT tools required for technical data and digital documentation

Soft skills & requirements:
- Excellent verbal communication skills and clear written reports.
- An understanding of health & safety legislation and standards.
- Must hold a valid UK driving licence.
