Graduate Operations Manager

Graduate Operations Manager – Peninsula House (South West Water HQ)

Compensation: £30,000 / year

About the Role

As a Graduate Operations Manager, you will be responsible for learning how to lead the operational and financial performance of a contract, ensuring delivery of work is safe, on time, and aligned with key customer expectations. As a key member of the contract succession plan, you will demonstrate an openness to learning from existing Operations Managers across various functions, with the aspiration to lead in future roles.

Key Responsibilities

You will learn to lead the following tasks alongside existing Operations Managers:

Contract Compliance & Crew Management

  • Chair the daily Toughbook compliance meeting, ensuring adherence to redlines and offsite forms.
  • Re-implement the team dashboard to track compliance metrics, including productivity, GCat compliance, and speeding.
  • Take control of the BW Contract fleet, plant, and logistics, including:
    • Allocating vehicles to the correct personnel.
    • Conducting regular plant audits to maintain efficiency.
  • Lead depot management, ensuring compliance with:
    • Health & Safety (H&S) standards.
    • Inductions and delivery procedures.

Logistics & Operations Support

  • Ensure the Logistics Manager has sufficient support to maintain consumable stock levels, including emergency out-of-hours (OOH) stock.
  • Finalise and set up a dedicated training/induction facility within the yard.
  • Become an expert in company and contract induction processes.

Daily Operations & Risk Management

  • Head the daily "jeopardy" exercise, which confirms:
    • What dig work has been completed.
    • What tasks need reallocation.
    • What projects are at risk of cancellation to optimise crew efficiency.

Reinstatement & Highway Legislation

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of reinstatement works, including:
    • Different types of reinstatement (backfill, reinstatement, site clearance).
    • Planning and coordination of post-dig site activities.
  • Develop a basic but growing understanding of street works legislation, including:
    • NRSWA compliance.
    • Section 74 requirements.
    • Defect management and permit duration challenges.
  • Actively engage with the engineering aspects of highways reinstatement, with a focus on long-term learning and internal coaching for teams such as planners or promoters.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Recent graduate with a degree in a relevant field.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in IT systems, including Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration abilities.
