Graduate Research Assistant – Hydrogen Energy Storage Techno-Economic Assessment

About the Role
This EPSCR PBIAA GW-SHIFT funded part-time post (FTE 0.5) is available immediately on a fixed-term contract until December 2026.
The starting salary will be from £33,951.00 (Grade E), dependent on qualifications and experience.
Located in Cornwall, this role supports Research Lead Prof Xiaohong Li to deliver a techno-economic and environmental assessment of hydrogen as a long-duration energy storage solution, aiming to improve grid flexibility in the Great Western region.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as research lead, coordinating the core research programme and monitoring day-to-day activities.
- Develop an AI-driven digital twin for real-time simulation, optimisation, and control of energy flows.
- Conduct high-resolution, region-specific modelling of hydrogen supply/demand scenarios to evaluate feasibility.
- Provide actionable insights for:
- Investment decisions
- Infrastructure planning
- Regulatory development
- Communicate complex research findings, progress reporting, and proposals for external funding/partnerships.
- Integrate hydrogen into regional energy grid models via digital twins.

About You
Qualifications & Experience
- Eligible for an internal application only.
- Minimum of a first-degree qualification (or equivalent experience) in a related discipline (e.g. engineering, energy systems, environmental science, AI/digital transformation).
- Demonstrable knowledge of research methods and sustainable energy metrics.
- Strong skills in:
- AI-driven energy systems (digital twins, simulation)
- Techno-economic/environmental evaluations.

Salary & Full-Time Equivalent
- Part-time: 0.5 FTE.
- Salary: Latest scale: £33,951 HSP baseline (Grade E).
- Secondment benefits available up to Grade L; consult local establishes rules accordingly.
