Graduate Software Engineer

Software Engineering Graduate Role (Lockheed Martin UK)

About the Role

  • Salary: £34,000 + Comprehensive Benefits

We’re seeking enthusiastic Software Engineering Graduates to join our dynamic in-house development teams. You’ll work on world-leading defence projects, gaining hands-on experience under mentorship from expert engineers in a collaborative office environment.

What You’ll Do

  • Work alongside senior engineers in customer discussions, translating enterprise requirements into precise, achievable technical specs
  • Design, prototype, and maintain clean, scalable software solutions to meet real-world operational needs
  • Develop in modern languages and frameworks, adhering to industry standard practices
  • Collaborate on automating processes through Infrastructure as Code (IaC), CI/CD pipelines, and test automation
  • Support Integration & Test teams during critical assurance phases
  • Investigate and resolve software failures affecting live systems

Core Duties

Technical Delivery

  • Convert operational requirements into technically clear acceptance specifications
  • Implement solutions using sound object-oriented principles (OOP) principles and tested architectures

Code Quality

  • Write maintainable code aligning with UK defence and government coding standards
  • Conduct and contribute to peer code reviews as part of DevSecOps workflows

Process Support

  • Champion automation (CI/CD pipelines, IaC deployments, Test-Driven Development)
  • Engage with Test and DevOps teams to ensure deployments meet Defence Information Assurance standards

Problem-Solving

  • Lead root cause analysis for reported software/integration defects in high-assurance environments

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Relevant undergraduate degree in a STEM discipline, particularly Computer Science or Software Engineering

Technical Requirements

  • Proficiency in OOP concepts with practical experience in ≥1 of:
    • Java ✔ |
    • Python ✔ |
    • C++/C# ✔ |
    • JavaScript/TypeScript ✔ |
    • Any library/framework (e.g., Angular/React client-side)
  • Familiarity with modern relational/noSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB)
  • Bonus points for: basic Agile/Kanban knowledge, GitLab usage, essentials of cloud platforms, or DevSecOps

Soft Skills

  • Clear communication, able to translate technical terminology for stakeholders
  • Ability to prioritise priorities in dynamic, customer-facing environments
  • Adaptability: Thrives in collaborative project environments (scrum-logic survives!)
