POSITION: GRADUATE STRUCTURAL ENGINEER
Join our award-winning engineering consultancy based in Ivybridge, Devon, and become part of a friendly, experienced team delivering a diverse range of structural engineering projects across the Southwest.
At John Grimes Partnership, we believe the best engineers develop through a combination of sound technical design and practical site experience. From the outset, you will work on live projects, attend site visits, and collaborate closely with experienced engineers who are committed to supporting your professional development.
The Role:
As a Graduate Structural Engineer, you will assist with the delivery of a wide variety of structural engineering projects ranging from residential and commercial buildings to industrial, marine and historic structures.
Whilst the role is primarily structural engineering, you will also gain valuable exposure to our civil, geotechnical and coastal engineering teams, providing experience across a range of disciplines that many larger consultancies are unable to offer.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Assisting with the analysis and design of steel, reinforced concrete, timber and masonry structures.
- Preparing structural calculations, technical reports and design information under the guidance of senior engineers.
- Producing and reviewing engineering drawings using AutoCAD and other design software.
- Undertaking structural inspections, condition surveys and site investigations.
- Visiting construction sites to monitor progress, observe construction techniques and assist with technical queries.
- Working alongside our Civil, Geotechnical and Coastal Engineering teams on multidisciplinary projects.
- Assisting in the preparation of fee proposals and tender submissions.
- Liaising with architects, contractors, clients, local authorities and other members of the design team.
- Developing practical engineering solutions that are technically robust, buildable and deliver value for our clients.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
