Graduate/Project Tailings Engineer
SLR’s busy Mine Waste team has enjoyed continued commercial success across the globe in recent years. Recent changes in legislation and guidance, in the aftermath of the Brumadinho dam disaster in 2019, have seen a steep rise in the demand for consultancy services in relation to mine waste tailings dams. Consequently, we currently have an exciting opportunity for:
Senior Grade Engineer
- Location: Nottingham, London, Bristol, or Truro
Team Expertise
Our mine waste team provides specialist services to the mining industry across:
- Ground investigation
- Analysis of laboratory data and monitoring
- Design (conceptual to detailed)
- Construction supervision
- Quality assurance
SLR uses state-of-the-art software to evaluate:
- Saturated and unsaturated flow regimes
- Deformation analyses
- Stability analyses
- Stress/strain analyses
- Modelling of soil-structure interaction
Graduate/Project Engineer (Nottingham-based)
Ideal for someone eager to develop in mining and civil engineering toward charted professional engineer status.
Key Responsibilities

Tendering & Proposals:
- Support tendering activities
- Proposal writing

Fieldwork & Monitoring:
- Planning, procurement, and management of site investigations
- Overseeing the installation of geotechnical instrumentation
- Monitoring of data readings

Modelling & Reporting:
- Numerical modelling
- Factual reporting
- Interpretive reporting

Essential Qualifications & Skills
- Degree: Minimum BEng, BSc, or MEng in Geotechnical, Civil, Mining Engineering or related field or relevant MSc
- Professional Membership: Graduate level membership (or above) of ICE/IMMM (or overseas equivalent)
- Technical Understanding: Principles of engineering/mining, geotechnical foundation knowledge
- Safety Awareness: Mindset of a safe working environment
- Driving License: Full UK license
- Numerical Proficiency: Strong math background
- Communication: Skilled in verbal/written correspondence
- Mobility: Willing to work 3-month deployments away
- On-site experience: Able to work in any field conditions
- Commitment: Motivated for Continued Professional Development
- Team Culture: Embodies SLR’s ‘one-team’ culture

Desirable Qualifications & Skills
- Software Knowledge:
- Numerical modelling (e.g., GeoStudio, Plaxis)
- CAD, GIS, and BIM skills
- Contract Experience: Familiarity with standard contracts, specifications, and bills of quantities
- Professional Membership: Graduate membership of ICE or IMMM
- Initiative: Examples where initiative solved challenges
- Leadership: Demonstrated leadership examples
- Opinion-Building: Confident stakeholder representations
- Project Ownership: Experience leading or instructing projects (or similar assignments):
- Organising/presenting at lunch and learn events
- Multilingual: Willing to learn another language
