The Role

As a Ground Investigation Consultant, you’ll be an indispensable part of our UK-wide Site Evaluation and Restoration team. Your role spans fieldwork, data management, and technical reporting, ensuring high-quality geotechnical and geo-environmental investigations across key sectors—with a focus on infrastructure, rail, highways, and waterways.

Who We’re Looking For

We’re seeking an established practitioner (from consultancy or contractor backgrounds) ready to take the next step in their career. As part of our Ground Investigation Contracting capability, you’ll:

  • Work on a diverse range of projects and sectors.
  • Broadening your skills into geo-environmental consultancy, including land quality and engineering geology assessments.
  • Join an award-winning team and be part of Arcadis’ top 3 global consultants in the field.
  • Collaborate internationally, sharing knowledge with global technical experts on projects worldwide.

Flexible UK office locations: Choose from Warrington, Manchester, Bristol, or Cardiff. Primary work areas: Across South/Southeast and Northwest UK.

Key Responsibilities

Your role will ensure the integrity and compliance of ground investigation outputs. Key tasks include:

Site & Task Management

  • Lead supply chain coordination and procurement for ground investigation projects.
  • Supervise contractors (e.g., drillers) on-site, with a focus on health, safety, and documentation.
  • Manage budgets, schedules, and documentation for risk mitigation.

Fieldwork & Data Collection

  • Conduct site characterisation, including soil, rock, and groundwater sampling.
  • Log soil/rock samples to British Standards, performing in-situ field testing.
  • Coordinate laboratory analysis of collected samples.

Reporting & Technical Outputs

  • Compile factual ground investigation reports meeting client and Arcadis standards.
  • Ensure reports exceed client expectations and comply with national standards (e.g., BS 5930).

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work cross-functionally to align with project objectives.
  • Maintain strong relationships with Project Managers and clients, ensuring clear communication.
  • Develop expertise in Arcadis’ service offerings, client needs, and sector trends.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • BSc (or higher) in Geology or equivalent Earth Science qualification.

Experience

  • Minimum 18 months in geo-environmental projects (geotechnical or contamination).
  • Fieldwork experience, with competence in supervision of contractors (e.g., drillers).
  • Award-winning team—experience matters here.

Key Skills & Traits

  • Proficient report writer (specialist in Factual Ground Investigation Reporting).
  • Awareness of hazards and risk management, including health & safety and budgeting.
  • Work towards professional membership/chartership (e.g., ICE, GI or equivalent).
  • Preferred: Experience in rail or highway sectors.
