Ground Source Heat Pump Design Engineer
Role Overview
Hex Energy Ltd is seeking a capable and motivated Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) Design Engineer to join our expanding team. The role involves designing and delivering commercial and domestic GSHP systems, ranging from small-scale installations to large projects (multiple MW capacity).
Working alongside one of the UK’s leading GSHP designers, this opportunity allows engineers to develop their expertise in a specialist growing sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake ground source feasibility assessments, including reviews of:
- Site constraints
- Geological conditions
- Assess geological conditions
- Interpret site investigation and borehole data
- Design detailed ground loops:
- Vertical boreholes
- Horizontal arrays
- Use specialist software (e.g., GLD/Loop, Pipe Builder or equivalents) to:
- Develop and optimise ground array designs
- Complete full plantroom designs:
- Heat pump sizing and selection
- Hydraulic schematics
- Buffer vessels, distribution systems, and controls
- Generate and maintain CAD drawings for:
- GSHP systems
- Plantroom layouts
- Update and maintain:
- Internal design tools
- Templates and software systems
- Contribute technical input:
- Tenders
- Proposals
- Project delivery
- Provide technical support:
- Installation teams
- Design clarification
- Work across:
- Commercial projects
- Domestic projects
- Drive design innovation and continuous improvement

Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Essential
✔ Proven experience in GSHP design ✔ Strong understanding of:
- GSHP systems
- Ground arrays
- Building-side integration ✔ Experience across domestic and commercial applications ✔ Knowledge of large-scale GSHP systems (~1MW+) ✔ CAD proficiency (AutoCAD or similar) ✔ Geological assessment and data interpretation skills ✔ Experience with design tools: Loop, Pipe Builder, or equivalents ✔ Strong technical problem-solving skills ✔ Communication & collaboration abilities

Desirable
🔹 Qualification or training in Geo-exchange/GSHP design 🔹 Experience with heat networks or district heating systems 🔹 Work background in scalable low-carbon projects 🔹 Understanding of UK standards, regulations, and best practices Note: Training and support available to achieve relevant qualifications where needed.
