To employ an apprentice to support our Grounds & Facilities Manager with a wide range of tasks throughout the village of Castle Donington.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

• To assist the Grounds & Facilities Manager with Grounds and Maintenance weekly work programme.
• Tasks will include use of appropriate machinery / equipment for the maintenance of Parish Council owned land (for example but not limited to strimmer, hedge cutters etc. Full training on the use of such equipment will be provided prior to first use and as necessary thereafter, as outlined below.
• Undertake necessary training as required to operate machinery / equipment.
• Carry out weekly litter picking around the Parish of Castle Donington as directed by the Grounds & Facilities Manager, including emptying of all bins.
• There will be a requirement to work outdoors in inclement weather.
• Open and close the facilities for bookings when required.
• Support Castle Donington Parish Council Staff and Councillors at Parish events as required this could be helping set up, clear away or other duties leading up to, during and after the event. You will be expected to work all of these. Notification of dates will be given at interview.
• Deliver promotional leaflets or material when required to houses and businesses within the local area and placing posters in notice boards in the village.
• To assist the Grounds & Facilities Manager with maintenance checks when required in our facilities and at our Parish owned Play Parks, Open Spaces, Allotments and Cemetery.
• To assist in undertaking maintenance tasks within the Councils land and properties (and facilities) including minor repair work, painting, general maintenance to ensure a high standard of public service is always provided.
• This is not an exhaustive list of duties and you will be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by your changing role within the organisation and the overall business objectives of the organisation.

Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

• (Core) Apply health and safety processes and procedures including risk assessments and or construction design management (CDM), manual handling, legislative requirements and organisational policies. Follow safe systems of work and safety information in line with employer requirements or site context (for example clearing their route before transporting materials).
• (Core) Apply environmental mitigation measures including storage and disposal of waste, for example sorting materials for recycling or composting, acting in compliance with legal requirements, organisational policies and pollution controls.
• (Core) Select, undertake a pre start check, set up, clean, store and safely operate tools, equipment and machinery (including pedestrian controlled and handheld) in line with current legislation and business policies.
• (Core) Communicate with technical (for example supervisors or managers) and non-technical audiences (for example clients or the public) using language appropriate to the audience.
• (Core) Identify plants commonly grown in the UK by scientific names including genus species and or cultivar.
