How you'll make a difference
As a Grounds Maintenance Operative, you will be part of a vital front-line team, helping to ensure public spaces such as parks, highways, cemeteries and conservations areas are maintained.
What you will be doing
In this varied role, you will undertake maintenance work including grass cutting, shrub maintenance, litter picking, trimming and reducing hedges and maintaining beds throughout South Gloucestershire. It will be your responsibility to carry out routine maintenance operations, including heavy cutbacks in public parks, open spaces, roadside verges and woodland areas. As you will be using commercial powered hand tools such as brush cutters, powered pruners, long reach pruners and pedestrian mowers, you must ensure that you are adhering to safe methods of work and relevant health and safety regulations. It will be key for you to assist with maintenance duties and horticultural operations in minor landscaping works such as the planting of bedding, shrubs and trees. When required, you will conduct routine maintenance of the council’s cycle route network using powered hand tools or mechanical equipment and assist in the collection of fly-tipping waste.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
