Grounds Person Location: The PIG, Bridge Place, Canterbury, CT4 5BH
About the Role
We are searching for an experienced and enthusiastic Grounds Person to join our friendly garden team at THE PIG, a hotel renowned for its unique and engaging work environment.
Our garden team operates in two core areas:
- Kitchen garden team: Manages productive garden spaces.
- Grounds team: Oversees lawns, trees, and maintenance of formal borders.
Both teams collaborate seamlessly on all projects and events, adhering to our simple rule:
“Our grounds should appear unstructured, informal, and not over-designed.”
You will report directly to the Head Grounds Person and play a key role in maintaining the functionality and presentation of the hotel’s grounds. Given that our gardens are accessible to guests, guest interaction and engagement are an essential part of the role.
Responsibilities
- Ensure all tasks assigned by the Head Grounds Person are completed effectively.
- Maintain the overall aesthetic of the hotel’s outdoor spaces in line with our informal yet inviting philosophy.
- Provide daily guest interaction and support as required.
- Cover maintenance responsibilities as needed, including:
- Lawn care and trimming.
- Tree and shrub upkeep.
- Formal border maintenance.
- Work harmoniously with the kitchen garden team on shared projects.

Requirements
- Experience in a similar role (preferred but not essential).
- Familiarity with PA1 and PA6 (usage and maintenance of garden machinery such as petrol strimmers and mowers).
- Attention to detail and a keen eye for ensuring grounds remain uncluttered yet aesthetically pleasing.
- Strong physical capability to manage outdoor-upkeep tasks.
- Commitment to maintaining a friendly and approachable demeanour when interacting with guests.
Working Arrangement
- Salary: £12.71 per hour (including OTE of £14.01 per hour via tronc).
- Hours: 35 hours per week, over five days (including weekends).
