Groundworker Apprentice

Groundworker Apprentice – Lanes Group

Purpose of the Role

The Groundworker Apprentice plays a key role in preparing construction and civil engineering sites, supporting the delivery of infrastructure projects. As one of the first trades on-site, this role focuses on:

  • Setting out work areas
  • Preparing ground surfaces
  • Installing essential elements like drainage and foundations to enable structural work

Working alongside engineers, supervisors, and other construction trades, the apprentice contributes throughout the full project lifecycle—from initial site preparation through to final completion activities.

This is a hands-on, practical role that develops core construction skills while supporting safe, efficient, and high-quality site operations.


Apprenticeship Information

  • Level: Level 2 Groundworker Apprenticeship
  • Duration: Approximately 18 months + End Point Assessment (EPA)
  • Hourly Rate: £10.40 (advertised salary reflects variations in weekly contracted hours. Calculated using standard hourly rates; annual salary adjusted based on contractual hours)
  • Delivery: Partnered with an approved training provider
  • Support: Dedicated study time included as part of your working week
  • Mentorship & Guidance: Ongoing support from your manager, mentor, and training provider

Key Responsibilities

Site & Technical Roles

  • Help dig trenches for foundations and utilities
  • Support the safe locating of underground services
  • Assist with reinstating ground surfaces after work completes
  • Learn safe use of tools, equipment, and basic machinery
  • Help move and organise materials around the site
  • Support guiding vehicles or machinery where necessary

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow site safety rules at all times, including PPE requirements
  • Work safely around machinery, excavations, and other hazards
  • Contribute toward keeping the site clean, tidy, and secure
  • Comply with company safety standards and applicable regulations

Team Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with your team, supervisors, and fellow trades
  • Ask questions, seek mentorship, and build confidence on-site
  • Communicate clearly for smooth daily operations
  • Contribute to punctual progress and high-quality outcomes

Accountability & Professional Development

  • Report issues to your supervisor immediately
  • Maintain pride in your craft and the final results
  • Complete apprenticeship training and assignments by deadlines
  • Participate in regular check-ins with your manager and training provider
  • Adhere to company rules, processes, and expectations

Qualifications / Training

Essential Requirements

  • Maths and English at Grade 4 (or equivalent to Grade D – A)* or Functional Skills Level 1
