Group Financial Accountant

The Role
We are recruiting a Group Financial Accountant to join the Group Accounting team of the finance department. In this role, you will be responsible for the following:
- Preparation of the group’s annual financial statements, including meeting audit and submission deadlines
- Reviewing the balance sheet control account reconciliations
- Provision of ad-hoc advice on financial accounting and control matters
- Identification of risks to be registered on the appropriate risk register
This role will involve taking ownership of the planning, delivering, monitoring, and reviewing of the completion of the annual financial statements for the University Group, including:
- Collaborating with the relevant directors to finalise the subsidiary companies’ draft financial statements for approval by the Subsidiary Companies’ Boards of Directors
You will:
- Produce year-end audit files and all supporting documentation for review, while working closely with the group’s external auditors
- Liaise with finance colleagues to ensure all audit queries are resolved and to meet statutory and regulatory deadlines
- Review and process all post-audit adjustments and amendments of the group’s accounts ahead of formal sign-off

Key responsibilities will also include:
- Supporting the development of regular cash flow reporting and forecasting at the company level
- Enabling effective cash management and optimising where possible, investments of surplus funds
- Providing assurance over the going concern status of group entities
Our Successful Candidate
Qualifications and Experience
You will be a qualified accountant (e.g., ACA, ACCA, CIMA) with at least an associate-level membership; fellowship-level membership would be advantageous. Your experience should include:
- Substantial financial accounting experience relevant to this role
- Extensive working knowledge of financial accounting and statutory reporting requirements
- Experience preparing statutory accounts and liaising with external auditors
- Experience in cash flow planning and reporting, as well as reconciliation and management of balance sheet control accounts
- Experience leading external audits would be considered a major plus
Knowledge and Skills
- Accounting and reporting experience under FRS 102
- Familiarity with the SORP for Higher Education
- Experience in Financial Accounting within the Higher Education (HE) sector would be considered advantageous
