About The Role
BT’s purpose is to ‘connect for good’ and its ambition is to become the most trusted connector of people, devices and machines. To achieve this, it’s important we are clear where we are on track and where we need to focus. Our Group Internal Audit team shines a light on what works well and where things can be improved, helping BT build solid foundations so it can go faster in delivering and achieving its purpose and ambition.
As a GIA Senior Manager you will play a key role in providing high quality assurance to the Board Audit and Risk Committee. You will lead the development of the internal audit plan for your business and risk area(s), working with senior stakeholders and other assurance teams to deliver co-ordinated assurance that provides appropriate coverage of risks. You will be responsible for representing GIA at relevant governance forums and for providing quarterly updates on GIA activity.
In terms of delivering the audit plan, you will lead teams of auditors, with third party expertise as needed, to deliver a portfolio of internal audits across BT Group. You will own key relationships with senior business stakeholders up to ExCo level, holding strategic conversations to support them in identifying assurance requirements.
Alongside leading the delivery of the audit plan, you will lead small groups of auditors to deliver strategic initiatives, driving continuous improvement and bringing external best practice and innovative thinking into our Internal Audit processes and methodologies. This role also includes the management and development of Audit Managers.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Lead the development of the risk-based audit plan for your risk and business area(s). This will include working with other Assurance providers to ensure the combined plans are aligned and flexing plans, when needed, to ensure they remain aligned to risk.
- Lead the delivery of a portfolio of audits, with Audit Managers and third-parties, across the business to time and quality, ensuring work is aligned to risk.
- For complex, sensitive and / or strategic risk areas, deliver high quality assurance to key stakeholders.
- Provide real-time support, challenge and actionable insight to management when they are developing and implementing new processes, including business change.
- Respond to requests from business stakeholders, providing ad-hoc independent audit insight and advice and co-ordinating support as appropriate.
- Act as a single point of contact for GIA in your Unit, building strong relationships with stakeholders including Risk and Assurance providers.
- Represent Audit at Unit Audit and Risk Committees and other formal and informal governance fora.
- Lead specific Internal Audit improvement initiatives with support from the broader team.
- Meet External Audit on a regular basis to share plans and drive efficiency, as appropriate.
- Manage Audit Managers to support them in their career and personal development. This will include delivering timely and appropriate feedback.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
