Job Summary

The Guitar Technician is responsible for the repair and servicing of guitars from consumers and artists. The role is a blend of craftsmanship, quality, and customer service and focuses on industry standards for repair and quality. A successful guitar technician completes a quality repair/servicing in the expected time and provides thoughtful service to the consumer.

Essential Functions

Main Duties

  • QC stock upon arrival to the store.
  • Perform restrings and extensive setups on Electric, Acoustic, Electro Acoustic, and Bass guitars.
  • Fixing/replacing guitar hardware and electronics.
  • File existing nuts.
  • Make and install new nuts.
  • Liaise with customers and high-profile Gibson artists on a daily basis and tailor setups/repairs to their needs.
  • Package and ship guitars as needed.
  • Track time and material usage.
  • Order replacement parts.
  • Spend time on the shop floor and on the phone engaging with repair and setup customers.
  • Perform warranty and out of warranty servicing and repairs.

Other Duties

  • Employee can be asked to perform other duties that are reasonable within the area of expertise.

Required Skills/Abilities/Experience

  • Able to bring new ideas to a team and creative repair solutions to elevate service to the highest level in the industry.
  • Previous direct consumer experience in a customer-facing environment.
  • 5 plus years experience in guitar repair and servicing.
  • Solutions oriented approach to challenges/issues.
  • Outstanding time management skillset with the ability to prioritize without direct supervision.
  • Ability to completely strip and replace all guitar hardware including electronics.
  • Basic understanding of carpentry.
  • Experience with re-fretting instruments.
  • Confident working with highly valuable vintage and new guitars.
  • Existing understanding of guitar tools and repair techniques.
  • Experience working with Nitro-Cellulose lacquer.
  • Working with high-profile artists on historically important instruments with discretion.
  • Sanding and buffing experience.
  • Able to communicate with other techs.
  • Willingness to learn about all Gibson brands.
  • Experience with painting and lacquering/finishing a plus.
  • Experience with re-valving and servicing amplifiers is a plus.

Essential Knowledge

  • Fluent in English and regional language.
  • Guitar playing / knowledge is highly advantageous.
  • Extensive expert knowledge of guitar components.
  • Extensive expert knowledge of guitar makes and models.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office applications and learn project management software.

  • Ability to work with empathy and sensitivity when handling a customer’s sentimental instrument.

Travel Requirements

  • This position is based in store but may require some local travel within London.
  • Must be able to have a flexible schedule and work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
