Haematology and Blood Transfusion Biomedical Scientist
Biomedical Scientist Vacancy – Haematology and Blood Transfusion
About the Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic, highly motivated, and proactive HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist with NHS diagnostic laboratory experience to join our Haematology and Blood Transfusion department, providing support for our 24/7 service.
This role is within a dedicated team of Biomedical Scientists (BMS) delivering round-the-clock diagnostic services. The ideal candidate will be a quick learner, effective team player, and someone looking to advance their career within a specialised haematology and blood transfusion setting.
Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will undertake the following duties (but not exclusively):
- Perform routine and special diagnostic services on patient and environmental samples (including potentially infectious materials) using manual and automated techniques, adhering to strict medical/scientific standards and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) on a rotational basis.
- Interpret diagnostic results and manage technical/analytical nonconformities—escalating to the line manager when necessary.
- Enter and cross-check data accurately and promptly using laboratory computer systems and automated analysers.
- Authorise and communicate reports electronically, in writing, or verbally to authorised personnel.
- Conduct quality checks, maintain internal records, and participate in:
- Internal/External Quality Assurance (QA) schemes
- Vertical and horizontal audits (under senior staff direction)
- Meet laboratory performance targets as directed by senior management.
- Under supervision, develop and test new techniques to meet service demands.
- Track progress towards a post-registration specialist competence portfolio and collaborate with the training officer and senior colleagues.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
