Hardware Design Authority – Job Description
About the Role
We are looking for Hardware Design Authority (x3 vacancies) to join Leonardo UK’s fast jet, drone (UAV), land, and naval defence platforms team. In this role, you will:
- Lead the delivery of high-performance self-protection systems, ensuring adherence to Leonardo’s internal hardware processes.
- Work closely with Integrated Project Teams (IPTs) and Programme Design Authorities to support:
- Hardware Qualification
- Production and delivery
- Repairs and support
This role is ideal for senior Electronics Engineers with multidisciplinary experience and a passion for systems architecture and full product development lifecycle (PDL).
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the hardware architecture of critical defence systems.
- Collaborate closely with systems, mechanical, and firmware engineers to meet Leonardo’s controls and lifecycle requirements.
- Support design changes, obsolescence management, and technical risk assessment.
- Act as an experienced mentor within the discipline, promoting best practice and knowledge sharing.
- Work within multi-disciplined teams to resolve technical challenges.
- Produce technical reports, configuration management documentation, progress updates, and risk assessments.
- Expand your influence across Leonardo’s sectors, providing guidance to resolve system-level issues.

Key Areas of Responsibility
- Production lifecycle management
- Hardware architecture and requirements tracking
- Testing of RF, microwave, digital, and high-speed systems
- Conformance to technical standards (Safety Critical Systems)
- International collaboration in cross-functional project teams
Essential Requirements
You must have: ✔ A thorough technical understanding of system/sub-system function and key performance drivers. ✔ Broad awareness of hardware, firmware, integration, RF, safety, and power management. ✔ Experience across the full engineering product lifecycle (preferably full ownership). ✔ Hands-on experience with RF/microwave testing, high-speed electronics, and digital systems. ✔ Ability to coach learners, manage risks, and advocate for best practices.
Desirable Additional Qualities
You would benefit from: ✔ Defence industry experience (especially in airborne platforms). ✔ Safety-critical systems or autonomous systems familiarity.
Security Clearance
