Role - Head Miller

Location: Harlow (Multi-Site)

Salary: £50K to £58K DOE+ Benefits

Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Lead Milling Operations Across Two High-Performing Production Sites

I am seeking an experienced Head Miller to take ownership of flour milling operations across two production facilities. This is a hands-on leadership role, responsible for delivering consistent product quality, operational efficiency, food safety compliance, and team performance.

The successful candidate will be a highly skilled milling professional with strong technical expertise, proven leadership experience, and the ability to step into operational milling duties whenever required.

Key Responsibilities

Milling Operations & Production Performance

  • Lead and coordinate milling operations across multiple sites.
  • Deliver target extraction rates while maintaining product quality and customer specifications.
  • Monitor production KPIs including efficiency, OEE, throughput, and downtime.
  • Ensure consistency and continuity of operations across both facilities.

Operational Support

  • Provide direct operational cover when required, running the mill during shift absences.
  • Support teams in troubleshooting production issues and minimising operational disruption.
  • Maintain high standards of performance and operational excellence.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Champion a strong health and safety culture across both sites.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation and company procedures.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement safe systems of work.
  • Investigate incidents and lead corrective action plans.

Food Safety & Quality

  • Ensure full compliance with HACCP, BRC, and food safety standards.
  • Take ownership of site hygiene standards, cleaning schedules, and audit readiness.
  • Work closely with Quality teams to address non-conformances and maintain accreditation standards.
  • Drive continuous improvements in product quality and process control.

Inventory & Resource Management

  • Manage raw materials, consumables, and production-related stock.
  • Work closely with warehouse and supply chain teams to ensure material availability.
  • Conduct wheat reconciliation activities and maintain stock accuracy.
  • Support cost-effective inventory control and waste reduction initiatives.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, motivate, and develop a team of millers and shift operators.
  • Manage recruitment, induction, training, and performance management activities.
  • Deliver structured development programmes aligned to recognised milling qualifications.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Engineering & Continuous Improvement

  • Partner with Engineering teams to coordinate preventative maintenance activities.
  • Support fault diagnosis and equipment improvements.
  • Contribute to capital projects and machinery commissioning activities.
  • Drive initiatives to improve efficiency, extraction rates, and overall operational performance.

About You

You'll be an experienced milling professional with a passion for operational excellence and team leadership.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Extensive flour milling experience.
  • Previous experience leading and developing production teams.
  • Strong technical understanding of mill flows, extraction optimisation, and flour functionality.
  • Formal milling qualifications and industry-recognised training.
  • Working knowledge of food safety, hygiene, and health & safety regulations.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Proven problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to manage operations across multiple sites.
  • Strong planning, organisational, and IT skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and using your own initiative.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.

Desirable

  • Understanding of UK employment legislation and workplace best practice.
