Senior Mortality Actuary – UK & Ireland Protection Market

About the Role

In this high-impact, client-facing Senior Mortality Actuary role at Swiss Re, you will play a leading technical and commercial part in shaping reinsurance solutions for the UK & Ireland protection market. Leveraging your expertise in actuarial modelling and pricing, you will tackle:

  • New business pricing and portfolio monitoring for Life & Health products, including individual and group mortality.
  • Development of Terms of Trade for markets and regulatory compliance.
  • Strategic commercial insights to support market positioning and client engagement.
  • Externally representing Swiss Re, contributing to industry events and client interactions.

This position includes line management responsibility for three direct reports, requiring leadership alongside actuarial and commercial responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Client Management & Strategy

    • Build and sustain trusted partnerships with client pricing and reinsurance teams, collaborating on new initiatives.
    • Lead pricing and product development discussions with clients while delivering evidence-based commercial solutions.
  • Pricing & Portfolio Leadership

    • Own development of mortality pricing assumptions, ensuring robustness and alignment with portfolio performance.
    • Lead traditional reinsurance pricing for tenders, delivering recommendations and achieving authority sign-off.
    • Monitor portfolio performance (e.g., rate reviews, recaptures, benefit changes) and optimise U.K. & Ireland in-force holdings.
  • Modelling & Analysis

    • Apply advanced mortality risk techniques (e.g., forecasting, improvement trends).
    • Develop and refine analytical modelling using statistical tools such as Python, R, and Power BI (with DAX/PowerPivot).

  • Stakeholder Reporting & Leadership

    • Present insights to senior stakeholders, highlighting risks and opportunities with clear data-driven reports.
    • Act as Market Unit’s UK & Ireland mortality portfolio owner within Swiss Re’s global forums, shaping strategy.
  • Team Development

    • Lead a small actuary-driven team, fostering performance, collaboration, and development in a high-quality environment.

About the Team

Based in London, the Life & Health Pricing team at Swiss Re supports:

  • Reinsurance pricing and portfolio management for UK/Ireland Life & Health markets.
  • seamlessly with client management, underwriting, claims, and reporting teams.

About You

We are seeking a qualified actuary (FIA/FFA/FSA or equivalent) with 2+ years of post-qualification experience. Critical requirements include:

  • Market Expertise:

    • Deep understanding of UK/Ireland Life & Health (re)insurance markets and mortality-based products.
    • Extensive individual/group mortality pricing experience; additional lines of business welcome.
  • Technical Skillset:

    • Mortality risk modelling & analysis (e.g., mortality improvement frameworks, volatility Simulations).
    • Proficient in modern analytics tools: Python, R, and Power BI (DAX/PowerPivot).
  • Soft Skills:

    • Effective client-facing communication (middleware/primary’s producer/agency channels).
    • Strong influence and leadership abilities to collaborate with stakeholders.
    • High-quality output under pressure while managing multiple priorities autonomously.

Compensation & Work Model

  • Base Salary: Competitive bracket of £92,000–£138,000 p.a.. Hiend of range subject to tenure and specific contributions.
  • Performance-Based Bonus: Subject to company and individual performance metrics.
  • Benefits: Swiss Re offers location-specific and global benefits, including pension, healthcare, professional development and flexible workplace incentives.

Expected Work Arrangement: Hybrid model with 3 in-office days per week.
