Head Mortality Pricing and Portfolio Management - L&H UK & Ireland (Hybrid, 80-100% FTE)
Role: Senior Actuary (Life & Health UK & Ireland Mortality Portfolio Owner)
About the Role
In this high-impact, client-facing role, you will play a leading role in shaping reinsurance solutions across the UK & Ireland protection market. Leveraging your technical actuarial and modelling expertise, you’ll contribute to new business pricing, portfolio monitoring, and strategical initiatives, collaborating closely with clients, senior colleagues, and Swiss Re’s global network.
Key commercial exposure opportunities:
- Influence pricing decisions, portfolio performance, and market strategy through direct engagement
- Represent Swiss Re externally via client interactions, enhancing market presence
- Lead a line management team with three direct reports
Main Activities

Client Relations & Partnerships
- Build and maintain long-term relationships with clients’ pricing and reinsurance teams
- Act as a trusted advisor on new business and portfolio monitoring topics

Pricing & Trade Development
- Lead development of Terms of Trade (ToTs) for UK & Ireland Life & Health protection products
- Focus areas: individual/group mortality risk
- Ensure pricing assumptions are robust, evidence-based, and aligned with market experience
- Own traditional reinsurance tender pricing for new and existing products, including:
- Ownership of recommendations and sign-off within organisational authority
- Collaborate with clients on pricing and product optimisation, delivering commercial insights and solutions
- Lead development of Terms of Trade (ToTs) for UK & Ireland Life & Health protection products

Portfolio & Performance Management
- Shared responsibility for UK&I in-force portfolios, including:
- Rate reviews, recaptures, benefit changes, and broader portfolio optimisation
- Monitor mortality portfolio performance, providing transparent reporting to senior stakeholders
- Highlight key risks and opportunities for strategic decision-making

- Market Representation & Team Leadership
- Represent Market Unit as local mortality portfolio owner in Swiss Re’s global forums
- Contribute to cross-border pricing, portfolio, and market strategy
- Lead and develop a small team, ensuring high-quality delivery and fostering a performance-driven culture

Our London-based team delivers reinsurance pricing across:
- Life & Health products for the UK & Ireland insurance markets
- In-force portfolio management & performance monitoring

About You: Requirements & Fit
Qualifications & Experience
- Full professional actuarial qualification (e.g., FIA/FFA/FSA or equivalent)
- 3+ years post-qualification in an insurance-related role
- Specialised experience in:
- UK & Ireland Life & Health (re)insurance markets or analogous industries
- Mortality risk pricing (preferred), with additional experience in other lines advantageous
- Mortality modelling and improvement frameworks
Technical Skills
- Expertise in mortality risk quantification, statistical modelling, and actuarial analysis
- Strong familiarity with:
- Mortality improvement patterns, drivers, and frameworks
- Relevant statistical and actuarial techniques
- Modern analytics tools/platforms, including:
- Python, R
- Power BI (with DAX/PowerPivot), Excel
Soft Skills & Attributes
- Outstanding communication and influencing skills
- Proven client-facing experience and impact
- Ability to excel under pressure, delivering quality work under tight deadlines
- Demonstrated sound judgement, strong decision-making, and commercial astuteness
- Appetite for client interaction alongside technical problem-solving

Compensation & Work Model
Salary Range
- Base Salary: £92,000 – £138,000 p.a. (FTE equivalent)
- Full-time role with salary determined by:
- Role profile (scope, complexity, responsibilities)
- Candidate’s profile: qualifications, expertise, specialisation, experience
Performance Compensation
- Variable component tied to achieved results and performance
