Head of Academic Departments – College of Health, Education and Public Life

Salary: £75,919 – £80,530 per annum Closing Date: 14 July 2026 Reference: HEP001-26-145
The University of Brighton seeks exceptional leaders to lead as Head of Academic Departments within the Collegiate Learning Environment (CLE), specifically within the College of Health, Education and Public Life.
About the Role
This is a pivotal senior academic leadership role focused on providing strategic, academic, and operational leadership across five departments:
- Department of Education and Social Work
- Department of Allied and Public Health
- Department of Nursing and Midwifery
- Department of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences
- Department of Psychology and Sport Science
The successful candidate(s) will:
- Support the College’s academic strategy, research, and knowledge exchange objectives.
- Enhance operational performance across the department.
- Drive outstanding student experiences aligned with the Brighton 2035 strategy.
- Foster equitable, inclusive, and financially sustainable outcomes.
Reports to the: College Executive Board, including the Executive Dean, Deputy Executive Deans, and Director of College Operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership: Align departmental performance with the College and University strategies. Actively engage with key stakeholders (academic, operational, and broader external partners) to deliver coherent, impactful outcomes.

Academic Governance & Quality Assurance: Ensure chair responsibilities (academic boards, committees) to uphold curriculum integrity, innovation, and student experience excellence. Oversee QA frameworks, accreditation, and external reviews to maintain academic standards.

Research & Knowledge Exchange: Promote research culture, dissemination, funding growth, and external partnerships. Champion wider strategic objectives e.g., impact, REF, student-staff collaboration.

Operational Excellence: Drive departmental efficiency, financial sustainability, and staff development. Cost-effective planning for resources, funds, and time management in line with long-term faculty goals.

Student Success & Inclusion: Champion student engagement, access, equity, and success initiatives. Mitigate and prevent discrimination, harassment, and safeguarding concerns.
Requirements & Experience
The successful applicant will:

Have a master’s degree or equivalent qualifications to academic practitioner or equivalent, with consideration for equivalent experience in elite niche sectors.

Demonstrated capability as:
- Frameworks for academic management (e.g., scaling up curriculum or teaching).
- Celebrating experience-led learning (e.g., via awards, publication, professional accreditation, or research/innovation projects).

Include measurable achievements where continuation of studies fostered transformative pedagogical change in a stimulating environment.

Have shown leadership skills in managing all aspects of academic or professional services through participation in high-stakes, large-scale program evaluation.

Experience governing and influencing governance (e.g., in ethics, inclusion, diverse backgrounds, targeted intervention, inclusive learning, or safeguarding).

Roadmaps of career progression typically include roles involving stretched curriculum management, expanding program learning, and managing significant resources.
Desirable Qualifications & Skills
- Membership of Registration Governing Body (RJB), HBOSCS, MICTSU, NMC, HCPC, or similar (depending on prior experience).
- Familiarity with HR administrative or logistics processes, annual budgets, IPMC and curriculum change decisions.

Job Preferences & Flexibility
This position operates in an agile working system. The candidate must agree to fulfill up to 80% of their duties from the UK (including home for work).
