Head of Careers – Scarborough College

Company Description

Scarborough College is an independent day and boarding school for children and young people aged 3–18, offering a vibrant community with a wide range of daily activities. The College combines strong academic ambition with extensive sporting, cultural, and social opportunities that broaden horizons and build confidence. Its ethos is rooted in traditional values, complemented by a progressive approach that includes the internationally recognised International Baccalaureate (IB) in the Sixth Form. Role Description

We are seeking a dynamic, proactive, and personable Head of Careers who will inspire our students.

The Head of Careers holds overall responsibility for creating, developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating the Careers and Higher Education programme throughout Scarborough College. Your role will ensure that support and guidance is provided to all students so they can achieve their best outcomes.

You will work closely with:

  • Deputy Head of Sixth Form & IB
  • Deputy Head (Pastoral & DSL)
  • Heads of Sixth Form
  • Heads of Tier

to oversee Careers Guidance provision across fields.

You should be passionate about sourcing, supporting, and developing Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) to ensure students reach their full potential in the future.


Professional Duties

General Responsibilities

  • To produce a coherent programme of careers provision for Key Stages 2–5.
  • To contribute to the Key Stage 3 PSHE timetable, incorporating:
    • Development of skills and qualities awareness
    • Subject choices
    • Use of labour market information (LMI)
    • Digital awareness and careers software familiarisation
    • Understanding of post-16 pathways via encounters with alternative providers.
  • Contribute to the Key Stage 4 pastoral programme by:
    • Delivering career tutorials
    • Developing career management skills
    • Promoting the use of careers advice resources
    • Enhancing career exploration
    • Encouraging engagement with education and employment providers (e.g., technical courses and apprenticeships).
  • To contribute to the Sixth Form timetable, delivering sessions in:
    • Career planning
    • Applications
    • Personal Statements
    • CV writing
    • Letters of application
    • Interview preparation
    • Job hunting
    • Alternative pathways
    • Overseas study opportunities.
  • To organise off-timetable enrichment events and activities re careers guidance, including:
    • An Annual Careers/Universities Fair
    • A Careers Club
    • Arrangement and promotion of Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs), apprenticeship fairs, and study roadshows.
  • To arrange/coordinate guest speakers throughout the Senior School to inspire and motivate students.
  • To grow a network of external contacts for:
    • Careers evenings
    • Career activity days
    • Internships
    • Practice interviews
    • Higher Education (HE) and Further Education (FE) providers
    • Businesses
    • Career sectors
    • Voluntary organisations.
  • To stay updated with national, international, and local developments in Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG), fostering best practice via:
    • Participation in local practitioner meetings
    • Membership of national organisations
    • Attendance at online forums.

Supporting CEIAG

  • To liaise with external agencies such as:
    • NYBEP (North Yorkshire Business Education Partnership)
    • Enterprise Advisers
    • CEC (Careers & Enterprise Company)
    • LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership).
  • To arrange and conduct 1:1 careers guidance interviews across all key stages, particularly focusing on post-16 and post-18 choices.
  • To develop and review careers action plans with students and ensure their targets are met, assisting them with:
    • Application completion
    • Sample testing
    • Planning.
  • To work collaboratively with colleagues to adapt student plans and/or expectations, raise aspirations, encourage focus, and provide additional support for vulnerable students and those with special needs.
  • To attend relevant Parents’ Evenings and Information events.
  • To help arrange and monitor impartial and independent careers guidance provision for students.
  • To be responsible for/oversee work experience provision.
  • To be responsible for or lead the development of enterprise skills within Scarborough College and engagement in enterprise activities.

Administrative and Development Responsibilities

  • To ensure ongoing use and engagement with UNIFROG for students and staff.
  • To be present at College on GCSE and IB/A level results days to:
    • Meet with students and/or parents
    • Address concerns or problems arising from results
    • Assist with UCAS clearing and other pathways.

Management of the Careers Department

  • Create, review, and update a Careers Policy Document outlining vision, aims, and objectives.
  • Develop an annual Careers Department Development Plan for review with Senior Management Team (SMT).
  • Prepare a termly report for Governors.
  • Provide evidence of CEIAG provision at Scarborough College for ISI inspection.
  • Manage the Careers Department budget.
  • Lead/oversee whole-college projects relating to careers development in collaboration with:
    • SMT
    • Heads of Tier
    • Head of PSHE.
  • Ensure student needs are met and targets achieved regarding:
    • Work experience
    • Enterprise skills development.
  • Develop and maintain relevant CEIAG and Careers Department sections on the Scarborough College website.
  • Organise the Careers Library and resources to ensure they are:
    • Accessible
    • Up-to-date
    • Containing appropriate materials, publications, and links.
  • Compile destination data for Year 11 (GCSE) and Year 13 (Sixth Form).
  • Promote and publicise Careers Department services to:
    • Students
    • Parents
    • Staff
    • Governors (updates, good news, tips, alerts, destination data).

Hours of Work

This is a permanent, part-time or full-time post, open to candidates depending on preferred working arrangements. The minimum requirement is 37.5 hours per week (term-time only) + 4 weeks holiday coverage.

Additionally, extra hours may be required—including weekends and holidays—as necessary for day-to-day operations in an independent boarding school setting. Staff are expected to contribute to:

  • Co-curricular activities
  • Boarding programme
  • Identified tasks outside regular hours (e.g., occasional evening/weekend duties).
