As Birkbeck moves into its third century, we are now seeking a new Head of School of Creative Arts, Culture and Communication (CCC). CCC brings together English and Liberal Arts; Creative Writing; Film, Media and Journalism; Languages and Linguistics; and Performing Arts and Creative Industries.

Based in Gordon Square, it boasts an exciting range of performing arts spaces, including the Peltz Gallery, a cinema and the Derek Jarman Lab. With around 70 academic staff and 900 students, the School has a strong research and teaching offering.
Reporting to the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Head of School will take up post at an important moment in the School’s development.
As Birkbeck launches its new Corporate Strategy for 2026-31, the post-holder will have the opportunity to work closely with creative industries and civic partners, deepening relationships and strengthening employability. They will lead the School into REF2029, strengthening an already excellent research environment, and continue to build on the School’s teaching offer and student experience.

The new Head of School will bring a creative attitude to the use of CCC’s unique creative spaces, housed within the Creative Practice Lab; they will develop further opportunities around AI, VR, and the creative industries.
Key Requirements
- Demonstrable track-record of academic leadership and management in a relevant discipline
- Research credibility to support academic colleagues
- Breadth of outlook to lead a broad-ranging, interdisciplinary School
- Strong commitment to arts and humanities subjects in the current climate
- Appreciation for Birkbeck’s distinctive mission
- Line management experience
- Understanding of both organisational and cultural change
- Creative and innovative attitude, with a particular focus on employability
- Expertise across research, teaching, and student experience
