Head of Department

Head of Embedded Software Development

Salary: Circa £95,000

We’re supporting an engineering and technology business undergoing a major transformation across embedded software, systems development, and product delivery.

They are seeking a Head of Embedded Software Development to lead software engineering strategy across a portfolio of complex embedded products used in demanding, high-performance environments.

This role combines technical leadership, organisational change, and engineering execution. The successful candidate will drive improvements in:

  • Software quality
  • Delivery predictability
  • Platform reuse
  • Development efficiency
  • A modern embedded engineering capability

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a high-performing embedded software engineering team
  • Define embedded software architecture and long-term platform strategy
  • Drive adoption of modern engineering practices across the software lifecycle
  • Introduce and mature CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and simulation capability
  • Establish model-based development approaches and virtual validation methods
  • Improve collaboration between hardware, systems, and software teams from concept stage onwards
  • Develop reusable and modular software platforms across multiple product lines
  • Define and track engineering KPIs linked to quality, delivery, and time-to-market
  • Support engineering transformation initiatives across tools, processes, and organisational culture
  • Manage cross-functional and multi-site technical collaboration

Required Background

  • Significant experience in embedded systems leadership
  • Strong knowledge of embedded C/C++, RTOS, and embedded Linux
  • Experience with software architecture, integration, and complex system development
  • Exposure to model-based development and simulation environments
  • Experience implementing CI/CD and automated test frameworks
  • Knowledge of hardware/software integration and electronic interfacing
  • Track record of improving engineering delivery and software maturity
  • Experience leading teams through organisational or technical transformation
