As part of our mission to drive the transition to renewable and low-carbon energy solutions, we are excited to announce an opportunity for a Head of Design to join our Design team in Birmingham. This pivotal role will shape the future of sustainable energy delivery across a diverse portfolio of public and commercial sectors.

We specialise in providing fully integrated design, build, and operational solutions for commercial energy centres and large-scale district heating schemes. Position Details

Job Title: Head of Design - Decarbonisation Location: Birmingham Hours: Monday–Thursday, 9am–5pm; Friday, 9am–3pm Salary: Competitive (depending on experience) Reports To: Head of Building Services – UK


Role Overview

The Head of Design – Decarbonisation will lead a multi-disciplinary in-house design team to develop compliant, commercially viable, large-scale decarbonisation solutions for commercial and public sector buildings across the UK and Ireland. The role involves:

  • Providing technical and strategic leadership on net-zero building services design.
  • Ensuring robust, buildable, and aligned solutions that meet client, regulatory, and funding requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Design Leadership and Strategy

  • Lead the full project lifecycle for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) design strategies for decarbonisation projects.
  • Oversee development from opportunity assessment and options appraisal through to concept and detailed design.
  • Manage and mentor a multidisciplinary MEP design team with expertise in:
    • Heat pumps
    • Electrification
    • District energy systems
    • Renewable energy integration
    • Controls optimisation
    • Demand management

Technical Governance & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with UK and Irish regulations and industry standards.
  • Provide technical assurance and robust design governance.
  • Continuously improve design tools, methodologies, and digital workflows.

Collaboration & Influence

  • Work closely with commercial, delivery, and operational teams to translate sustainability objectives into performance targets.
  • Develop net-zero roadmaps and business cases.
  • Maintain expertise in emerging technologies, policy developments, and carbon reporting frameworks.

Performance & Quality Assurance

  • Establish and monitor design performance KPIs to drive quality, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
  • Align design goals with client and stakeholder expectations.
