Head of Energy Security Modelling
Energy Security Modelling Team Lead – Whole Energy System Resilience Directorate
National Energy System Operator (NESO)
About the Role
The National Energy System Operator (NESO) recognises the potential of bright and talented individuals, and we encourage you to join us as Great Britain’s energy system undergoes an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation.
Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
The Whole Energy System Resilience (WESR) directorate strengthens whole-energy-system resilience by being a catalyst for change—turning insight into coordinated, prioritised action that reduces risk and builds capability across the system. WESR delivers this through:
- Analysis
- Assessments
- Reviews
- Emergency exercises
- Plans driving tangible improvements with our partners
This role is to lead WESR’s Energy Security Modelling area, developing and delivering robust modelling to provide advice and guidance to the authorities (DESNZ & Ofgem) on resource adequacy for electricity, gas, and future energy vectors, including hydrogen.
Key responsibilities include:
- Identifying and assessing risks to energy security of supply across short, medium, and long terms
- Recommending and influencing implementation of mitigation measures
- Ensuring our work sets industry benchmarks for technical capabilities and analytical rigour
NESO fosters a hybrid working environment, offering flexible arrangements such as office, home-based work, and regular in-office collaboration (e.g., weekly team presence at Warwick or Wokingham offices).
Key Accountabilities
- Lead assessments and advice on whole-system adequacy, fuel dependencies, and interconnections to identify vulnerabilities under varying scenarios and time horizons.
- Oversee risk identification and analysis focused on supply continuity, including infrastructure reliability, fuel logistics, market dynamics, and international dependencies.
- Translate insights into evidence-based recommendations, including capacity market improvements.
- Coordinate across NESO to ensure a collective view of energy system resilience and fulfilment of operational obligations.
- Use NESO’s trusted technical authority status to influence system operations, policy, market design, and long-term strategy.
- Build and maintain partnerships with government (e.g., DESNZ), Ofgem, and industry to align on supply adequacy and resilience.
- Lead a high-performing team of modellers (six direct reports, alongside associated sub-teams).

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
