Head of Engineering (Software Delivery & Operations)

Bristol/Hybrid
Salary: Up to £120k + Company Benefits

About the Role

Lead engineering delivery for an innovative software company within the education technology sector.

We're looking for an experienced Head of Engineering to lead Development, QA and Product teams, driving the successful delivery of high-quality software while shaping engineering culture, delivery practices, and operational excellence.

This is an ideal opportunity for an Engineering Manager, Head of Software Development, Software Development Manager, or Engineering Director ready to take ownership of a growing engineering function and influence both technology strategy and team performance.

The Role

Working closely with senior leadership, you'll bridge the gap between business strategy and engineering execution, ensuring projects are delivered efficiently, teams are empowered to succeed, and engineering standards continue to evolve.

You'll lead multidisciplinary teams, improve delivery performance, champion modern engineering practices, and play a key role in shaping the future of the technology function.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop Development, QA, and Product teams.
  • Own software delivery, ensuring projects are prioritized, planned, and delivered successfully.
  • Drive improvements across engineering processes, governance, and delivery performance.
  • Champion modern engineering practices, including automation, AI, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with senior stakeholders to shape technology roadmaps and delivery plans.
  • Provide visibility of delivery progress, risks, and engineering performance.
  • Support technical decision-making and remove barriers that impact delivery.

About You

You'll be an experienced engineering leader with a passion for building high-performing teams and delivering quality software.

  • Experience leading Development, Engineering, or QA teams within a software business.
  • A strong background in software delivery, engineering operations, or technology leadership.
  • Experience balancing strategic planning with operational execution.
  • A solid understanding of modern software development, DevOps/SysOps, and engineering best practices.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • The ability to contribute to technical discussions while empowering teams to deliver.
  • A passion for continuous improvement and emerging technologies, including AI.
