Head of Engineering
Head of Engineering (Reading or Amsterdam)
A leading Independent Power Producer (IPP) is accelerating the energy transition, designing, building, and operating utility-scale solar farms and battery storage across the UK and Northern Europe. With 1.1GW of renewable assets, they aim to expand to 1.3GW by 2031.
They are now seeking a Head of Engineering to lead a multidisciplinary engineering team and oversee the design and delivery of their grid-scale solar PV and BESS (battery energy storage system) project pipeline.
You will be the key technical authority, responsible for overseeing projects totalling £100–150m of annual construction across the UK, Ireland, Netherlands, and Belgium. This involves leading teams in Mechanical, Electrical, C&I (Control & Instrumentation), CAD, Grid Connection, and Civil Engineering, shaping the engineering vision, and driving delivery from feasibility through to commissioning.

The Role
- Lead design of grid-scale solar PV and BESS systems
- Oversee feasibility assessments, site evaluations, and grid connection planning
- Manage budgets, contracts, and capital project delivery
- Drive technology selection and engineering standards
- Ensure HSEQ (Health, Safety, Environment, Quality) compliance across the project lifecycle
- Interface with regulators, utilities, investors, and partners
- Grow and develop the multidisciplinary engineering team
What They’re Looking For
Key Experience & Skills
- Extensive grid-scale solar PV and BESS design experience
- Battery expertise (BMS, cell chemistry, degradation modelling)
- Knowledge of UK Distribution Network Operators (DNOs)/Transmission System Operators (TSOs), including connection and testing processes
- Experience with HAZOP/HAZID (Hazard and Operability/Hazard Identification) and HSE (Health and Safety Execution)
- Full turnkey project delivery (from civils to commissioning)
- Proven leadership of multidisciplinary engineering teams
- Market knowledge of the Netherlands/Belgium BESS sector (desirable)
- Experience with CDM 2015 (Construction Design and Management) / Principal Designer frameworks

Language & Certification
- Dutch or Flemish language fluency (advantageous)
- Chartered Engineer status preferred
- Degree in an engineering discipline (mandatory)
- Proven UK grid-scale BESS/solar PV track record (required)
Experience in targeted regions
- Experiencer in the Netherlands/Belgian BESS markets is desirable
