Head of Engineering
London
Our client is a specialist bank operating in the global payments and FX space, providing critical financial infrastructure to institutions and organisations around the world. They are modernising their technology platforms and moving toward an agentic, intelligence-driven operating model. They're now looking for a Head of Engineering to build and scale the engineering organisation behind their payments and FX platforms - systems that need to be fast, resilient, and secure at high volume.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You'll set the technical direction, but you'll earn the trust of a team of strong, opinionated engineering leads by being credible in the detail - not just by title.
What you'll do
- Own engineering strategy and execution across Payments, FX, Data, Integration, and Platform domains, working hand-in-hand with the Head of Architecture to turn design intent into delivery.
- Bring consistency to how the organisation builds: standardise frameworks, patterns, and engineering practice across teams that currently work in different ways - without being dogmatic about it.
- Lead a hybrid delivery model: in-house engineers, an offshore team, and outsourced project teams, unified under a common way of working.
- Take the AI-assisted engineering practice from grassroots adoption to something consistent and measurable - teams already use tools like Claude and Codex daily; we need someone to industrialise that and prove its value with metrics.
- Build a strong internal engineering bench, rebalancing a currently top-heavy team structure toward a healthier mix of senior and mid-level talent as the team grows from ~20 to ~30 permanent engineers.
- Champion engineering quality, automation, CI/CD, observability, and reliability, in a regulated banking environment.

- A proven track record leading and scaling engineering teams in fast-moving, transformation-heavy environments - you know what good looks like at scale, and you know how to get there from a less-than-perfect starting point.
- Deep hands-on technical grounding (Java, Kotlin, Spring Boot, event-driven systems on AWS; Kafka experience is a strong plus) - enough to hold your own with senior engineers, not just direct them from a distance.
- Experience managing blended teams: in-house, offshore, and outsourced/vendor delivery.
- A pragmatic, fintech mindset. This role needs someone who can move at fintech pace, not someone used to the guardrails of a large, slow-moving institutional bank.
- Comfort operating in a regulated financial services environment.
- Experience with AI-enabled engineering workflows or intelligent automation is highly desirable.
