Head of Engineering

Head of Engineering – First Bus Engineering

About the Role

The Head of Engineering is accountable for driving and supporting regional leadership teams in engineering performance across their designated B2C region.

Operating within the Central Engineering leadership team, this role sits under the Regional Director and spans multiple locations. The successful candidate will:

  • Build a customer-centric culture
  • Ensure statutory, legal, and regulatory compliance
  • Partner with Service Delivery Directors, Senior General Managers, and General Managers
  • Embed the divisional governance framework set by the Director of Engineering Excellence
  • Enforce standard operational policies and procedures within the LBU (Local Bus Unit)

Key Details

  • Location: Scotland
  • Hours: 37.5 hours per week
  • Salary: Up to £95,000 DOE

About You

Significant experience as a credible leader in the service sector.

  • A team player who thrives in collaborative environments
  • Aligned with and committed to First Bus Strategy
  • Strong analytical insight and financial literacy
    • Quickly assesses business opportunities
    • Adopts a "can-do" approach in problem-solving
  • Extensive knowledge of all relevant legislation, including:
    • PSV (Public Service Vehicle) Operator License Compliance
    • Experience with improvement methodologies
  • Demonstrable record of:
    • Delivering major change initiatives
    • Achieving sustained improvements in engineering environments
  • Ability to challenge the status quo and influence resistant colleagues
  • Charismatic communicator and inspirational leader, able to:
    • Engage and influence all levels of the business
    • Collaborate with key internal & external stakeholders
  • Results-driven and strategically focused, with the flexibility to:
    • Develop big-picture thinking
    • Dive into operational details when needed
  • While bus experience is not mandatory, a solid understanding of:
    • Key challenges in public transport
    • Customer needs in the sector is critical
