Head of Engineering (Data Platforms)

An experienced Head of Data Platform Engineering is required to lead the strategy, development and operational excellence of a next-generation enterprise data platform. This role is responsible for building and scaling high-performing engineering teams while driving platform adoption, improving developer experience and enabling data-driven product development across a global technology organisation.
The successful candidate will combine strong engineering leadership with expertise in cloud platforms, distributed systems and modern data architectures, while influencing senior stakeholders and shaping long-term engineering strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor and develop a multidisciplinary organisation of Technology Managers, Platform Engineers and Data Engineers.
- Own the strategy, roadmap, delivery and operational excellence of a large-scale real-time data platform.
- Drive a Platform as a Product approach, delivering intuitive self-service capabilities that improve developer experience.
- Partner with Engineering, Product and business leaders to increase adoption of data platform capabilities and federated data architecture principles.
- Define engineering strategy, organisational design and delivery models that enable scalable, high-performing teams.
- Build strong cross-functional relationships and influence strategic decisions across engineering and product leadership.
- Coach and develop Technology Managers, creating succession plans, accountability and leadership capability.
- Improve platform reliability, scalability, performance and operational efficiency through modern engineering practices.
- Collaborate with cloud technology partners to maximise platform capability while ensuring effective infrastructure investment.
- Track platform adoption, developer experience, operational performance and engineering outcomes using data-driven metrics.
- Resolve complex engineering and data governance challenges while supporting long-term platform scalability.

Requirements
- Significant experience leading and scaling large engineering organisations.
- Proven experience managing Technology Managers and building high-performing engineering teams.
- Strong background in Platform Engineering, Developer Platforms, Cloud Infrastructure or related engineering disciplines.
- Experience designing, building or operating enterprise-scale data platforms, distributed systems or real-time streaming architectures.
- Strong understanding of platform engineering principles, infrastructure as code and modern cloud technologies.
- Experience implementing self-service developer platforms using a product-led approach.
- Ability to influence senior engineering, product and business stakeholders without direct authority.
- Experience developing engineering strategy, organisational structures and scalable delivery models.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to simplify complex technical concepts for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Pragmatic leadership style with the ability to balance long-term strategy and operational delivery.
- Passion for coaching, mentoring and building a culture of continuous improvement.
