Head of Engineering at AppFox

Your Mission

You’ll own engineering at AppFox:

  • The team, including 13 engineers (including 2 leads + lead engineers).
  • The technical direction, quality bar, and pace of delivery.
  • Reporting to the Head of Product, you’ll be the senior technical voice in the business with real autonomy.
  • Defined authority across technical, financial, and quality aspects of engineering.
  • Trust to make high-level calls within the company’s goals and objectives.

Key Focus Areas

Engineering Leadership & Technical Direction

  • Own the technical vision of AppFox’s products and the new application (architecture, standards, and tooling) while they evolve with the business and technological landscape.
  • Bring strategic breadth—challenge conventions, introduce modern approaches (scalable infrastructure, managed services), and ensure decisions are based on merit, not habit.
  • Hold quality high—protect and enhance DORA high-performing practices (CI/CD, frequent small releases, strong review/testing disciplines) without disrupting what works.
  • Own delivery bent: critical planning, prioritisation, and predictable shipping—partnered closely with Product.
  • Accountable for security, privacy, and quality across the entire engineering team.

People & Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop 13 engineers, including two team leads.
  • Promote emerging leaders, fostering their growth instead of micromanaging outcomes.
  • Own people management results: performance, development, hiring, and difficult conversations.
  • Cultivate a curious, forward-focused engineering culture, including engaging with industry trends, meetups, and external ideas.

Strategy & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with Head of Product—bring engineering perspective early, ensuring informed, shared decisions.
  • Strategy & resourcing shape: guide strategic initiatives, assess technical feasibility, and advise on cost vs. commercial payback.
  • Maintain strong senior-level relationships across the business and with key platforms (Atlassian, monday.com).

Leveraging AI: Revolutionising How We Build

With AI transforming the future, this role pivots in two key areas:

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

1. AI In How We Build As AI reshapes engineering, top performers embrace it as a force multiplier. Sets expectations:

  • Daily routine integration—AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Cursor) and agentic tooling used effectively.
  • AI-assisted review, testing, and automation to reduce repetitive work.
  • Small agentic workflows taking over toil. At a broader level, explore AI-driven bottleneck resolution and project management optimisation.

2. AI In What We Build Our products help teams govern and optimise content/workflows across Confluence, Jira, Miro, monday.com. AI is transforming their capabilities. Responsibilities:

  • Identify where AI adds genuine value across the product portfolio and where it doesn’t—prioritize features that:
    • Meet high evaluation (reliability/lifespan), and commercial relevance.
    • Address cost, latency, and safety rigorously (focusing beyond flashy demos).
  • Consider external AI agent interactions—how our products should interact with or support them.
  • Proven hands-on (or) leading teams building AI/ML-powered production features is critical!

No preconceived playbook—the role is here to break new ground.
