Head of Engineering
Location: Manchester (Hybrid)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Head of Engineering to join a well-established organisation undergoing significant technology transformation. This is a senior leadership role responsible for shaping the engineering function, driving delivery excellence, and ensuring the successful development of secure, scalable, and high-performing technology platforms.
This position is ideal for a technology leader who thrives in complex environments and enjoys building high-performing engineering teams while working closely with architecture, change, and business stakeholders.
The Role
As Head of Engineering, you will lead the Engineering function, taking ownership of engineering standards, governance, delivery performance, and technical capability across both internal teams and third-party partners. You'll play a key role in translating strategic business and technology priorities into successful engineering outcomes while fostering a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and innovation.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership to the Engineering function, ensuring alignment with wider business and technology objectives.
- Define and embed engineering standards, best practices, governance, and delivery controls.
- Lead end-to-end engineering delivery across design, build, testing, and release.
- Drive the adoption of modern engineering practices, automation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Manage engineering capacity, delivery roadmaps, and resource allocation to meet business priorities.
- Work closely with Architecture, Change, Operations, and senior business stakeholders to deliver high-quality technical solutions.
- Ensure platforms and products are scalable, resilient, secure, and meet agreed performance and availability targets.
- Monitor engineering performance, delivery health, risks, and KPIs, implementing improvements where required.
- Lead, mentor, and develop high-performing engineering teams, creating a culture of accountability and professional growth.
- Manage relationships with third-party technology partners, ensuring consistent delivery standards and value for investment.

About You
We're looking for a proven technology leader with experience operating in large, complex organisations. You'll ideally have:
- Significant experience leading engineering or technology delivery functions.
- Strong knowledge of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and modern delivery methodologies.
- A track record of implementing engineering governance, standards, and best practices at scale.
- Exceptional leadership skills with experience developing and mentoring high-performing teams.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience delivering technology within hybrid or outsourced environments.
- A passion for continuous improvement, engineering excellence, and delivery optimisation.
- Experience working within a regulated industry such as Financial Services or Insurance (highly desirable).
- Exposure to data platforms, data engineering, or analytics environments.
- Experience collaborating with Enterprise Architecture and Change functions.
