Head of Estates Operations – British Transport Police

Job Introduction

  • Salary: £72,436.28 plus £4,613.61 London allowance per annum
  • Contract Type: Permanent
  • Location: Force Headquarters / London Hub, 200 Buckingham Palace Road, London, SW1W 9TJ
  • Working Arrangement: Blended approach of home and office-working is available
  • Hours: Full-time (37 hours per week)

This role presents an exciting opportunity to join the Estates Department as Head of Estates Operations, driving excellence across BTP’s diverse national estate.


The Opportunity

As Head of Estates Operations, you will:

  • Lead the delivery of estates, facilities and compliance services across BTP, ensuring all buildings, assets, and workplaces support operational policing effectively and meet legal requirements.

  • Direct senior leadership in facilities management, estates compliance, building services engineering, health and safety, risk management, and operational assurance.

  • Oversee outsourced service delivery as the senior client, fostering performance excellence and continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate closely with the Estates Business Partner and Programme Manager to align operational delivery with strategic objectives, business planning, and transformation initiatives.

  • Shape the future of BTP’s estate by driving innovation and creating safe, efficient, and sustainable work environments that enhance policing capacity.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Strategic leadership in estates operations, compliance, supplier performance—ensuring facilities management, health and safety, risk management, engineering, and contractor delivery meet high standards with cost efficiency.

  • Bridge the gap between strategic priorities and operational execution, ensuring estate projects are embedded into daily operations and supporting long-term investment decisions.

  • Leverage data, reporting and performance insights to optimise budget management, operational effectiveness, and continuously improve service delivery.


The Requirements

Essential

  • Professional qualifications (e.g., RICS, IWFM, CIOB, RIBA, or equivalent) plUS a degree (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven expertise in analysing information, reporting, and independent work.
  • +15 years’ experience leading estates, facilities management, or property services within a large, complex multi-site organisation, including:
    • Managing outsourced contracts and supplier performance.
    • Overseeing operational service delivery.
  • Strong leadership—ability to influence senior stakeholders, manage multi-disciplinary teams, and drive high performance.
  • Compliance & risk expertise—deep knowledge of health/safety regulation, building safety, statutory compliance and assurance frameworks in a regulated environment.
  • Commercial & analytical acumen—experience managing budgets, value-for-money analysis, using performance data, and implementing continuous improvement.
