The Opportunity

This is an exciting senior leadership role for an experienced finance professional who wants to make a real difference in a purpose-driven organisation. Reporting directly to the CEO and sitting on the Senior Management Team, you will take strategic and operational responsibility for the financial health of our charities, while helping to shape how we work; bringing fresh thinking, modern tools and a collaborative mindset to a team already doing great work.

You will be given the space and trust to review how finance operates and to drive improvements in efficiency, technology and cross-departmental working, all within the context of a values-led charity where resource stewardship matters.

What You'll Do

Strategic & Financial Leadership

  • Provide strategic financial management, reporting and advice to the Boards of Directors and senior leaders
  • Lead financial planning, budgeting and performance monitoring across the organisation
  • Conduct financial analysis to identify trends, cost savings and growth opportunities
  • Ensure robust financial controls and risk management at strategic and operational levels
  • Act as Company Secretary and maintain the organisation’s compliance with all relevant legislation
  • Support business development through financial modelling, bids and project work

Finance Team & Operations

  • Lead, support and develop the Finance team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement
  • Bring energy and curiosity to how the team works, identifying opportunities to use technology, automation and smarter systems to reduce manual effort and improve accuracy
  • Build strong working relationships with HR, Operations and other departments, spotting opportunities where joined-up systems or processes can benefit the whole organisation
  • Maintain oversight of core finance functions: payroll, supplier payments, banking, reconciliation and procurement

Who We’re Looking For

  • A qualified accountant or qualified by experience, with at least five years’ post-qualifying or senior finance management experience
  • A strategic thinker who is equally comfortable rolling up their sleeves on operational matters
  • Someone who embraces technology and is motivated to find smarter, more efficient ways of working
  • A confident communicator who can translate complex financial information for non-finance colleagues and Boards
  • A collaborative team leader who brings out the best in others
  • A strong commercial experience including understanding the importance of managing and reporting of cashflow
  • Knowledge of or genuine interest in the charity/not-for-profit sector
  • Experience of supporting tenders, bids and bid meetings
  • Experience of financial systems implementation or process improvement is highly desirable

Job Title: Head of Finance

Location: hybrid position working 2 or 3 days from the office per week as required by the responsibilities of the role. Our head office is based in Waterbeach, Cambridge.

Salary: £63,207 - £74,156 per annum, depending upon experience (35 hours per week although we will consider candidates wanting to work part time hours, a minimum of 28 hours per week)

Hours of work: Monday to Friday with the ability to work flexibly as and when required

Contract: Permanent
