We are looking for an experienced and motivated finance professional to join our Finance Directorate as Head of Finance.
The post holder will provide expert financial management, support and advice to designated clinical directorates, working closely with directors and senior managers to ensure financial targets are achieved and resources are used effectively. This will include production of accurate, timely budgets, monthly accounts, forecasts and variance analysis, investigations and advice on highly complex issues, provision of strategic financial and business planning advice. The post holder will also ensure that the Head of Financial Management is fully informed of the financial performance and plans of the designated directorates.
As a senior member of the Finance Directorate, you will contribute to the wider objectives of both the Finance team and the Trust, promoting continuous improvement, developing strong working relationships with stakeholders and supporting the development of finance and non-finance colleagues through coaching and leadership.
This Post Is Advertised As Either
- Band 8b for candidates who already have the skills, knowledge and experience to undertake the role independently; or
- Band 8a (Development Post) for an exceptional candidate with the required professional qualifications and potential who would benefit from a structured development programme before progressing to Band 8b, subject to meeting agreed competencies.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will provide expert financial management information and advice to support the delivery of financial and operational objectives across designated clinical directorates.
Key Responsibilities Include
- Leading the production of budgets, forecasts, monthly financial reports and variance analysis.
- Providing specialist financial advice to support operational and strategic decision-making.
- Supporting the delivery of business planning, budget setting and financial recovery plans.
- Monitoring income, expenditure, delivering value (DV) programmes and key performance indicators, ensuring financial targets are achieved.
- Leading and developing the finance team supporting the directorates, providing coaching and support to both finance and non-finance colleagues.
- Promoting continuous improvement and consistency across financial management processes.
- Supporting month-end and year-end financial reporting and external audit requirements.
- Building effective working relationships with directors, managers and other key stakeholders across the Trust.
The role supports two clinical directorates and requires the post holder to work across multiple Trust sites.
Starting with NELFT
NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop-in sessions focusing on engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Goodmayes, Essex.

Probationary Period
This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).
High Cost Area Supplement Outer London (B&D, Redbridge, Havering and Waltham Forest, Goodmayes)
This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (with a minimum of £4,870 to a maximum of £6,137 p.a. pro rata for part time).
