Head of Finance
Salary: £63,494
Grade: Grade 1
Position Type: Permanent, full-time (37.5 hours a week) Flexible working considered
Responsible To: Director of Finance
Direct Reports:
- Financial Reporting & Systems Manager
- Financial Controller
- International Programmes Finance Manager
- Internal Audit Manager
Location: Truro, Cornwall (Hybrid) or Remote (UK-based) with approx. 4 travel visits to Truro per year
Role Purpose
This is a new role established to support and strengthen ShelterBox’s financial capacity. The Head of Finance will be accountable for all day-to-day finance responsibilities, ensuring the strength, integrity, and effectiveness of financial management.
Key responsibilities include acting as a pivotal business partner across the organisation for all financial matters. Reporting to the Director of Finance, this role involves:
- Leading the finance function, overseeing:
- Budgeting
- Financial reporting
- Compliance and statutory accounts
- Providing oversight for operational finance team, board reporting, and committee activities
- Blending leadership with hands-on delivery due to the small team structure
While primarily a leadership position, the role includes an active, involved approach to project execution. The ideal candidate will drive finance function modernisation and be experienced in customer-centric service provision.

Who We’re Looking For
We seek a qualified accountant with a minimum of 10 years’ post-qualification experience (PQE) in management.
Essential Requirements:
- Proven track record of finance function leadership, establishing modern, progressive systems with a service-focused approach
- Experience in:
- Accounting for projects, professional services, or inventory
- International NGO (INGO) sector (desirable but not obligatory)

- Someone with the ability to create long-term impact, combining technical expertise with leadership skills
- Thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, partnering closely with senior managers and international stakeholders
Main Responsibilities
Team Leadership
- Lead and support a four-member finance team
- Provide guidance, expertise, and a point of escalation for team issues
- Represent finance team in senior leadership discussions
Business Partnering
- Work as a strategic advisor to:
- Executive team
- Senior management
- International affiliate organisations
- Be a primary contact for financial matters relating to larger international affiliates
Core Financial Responsibilities
Fornis advisory support across:
- Monthly financial reporting
- Annual budgeting, quarterly forecasting
- Financial operations (payroll, accounts payable, expenses, forex, cash & banking)
- Digital transformation of financial business systems
- Project financial management for International Programmes, including donor reporting
- Internal audit services

Tax & Compliance
- Support Financial Controller during external annual audit, providing a quality control gateway
- Advise on both direct and indirect taxation
- Oversee Gift Aid processing to ensure compliance and optimize recovery
Stakeholder & Partnership Management
- Manage relationship with investment advisory partners, assessing value and risk of investment returns
- Prepare and present Board and Finance Committee reports, chairing attendance in absentia of the Director of Finance
Project & Performance Management
- Maintain an annual team timelines calendar
- Conduct ad-hoc financial analysis and reporting
- Develop and track finance KPIs
- Maintain relationship with external audit firm
Additional Responsibilities
- Assume any other duties relevant to the role as required
