Overview of the Role

As Head of Health, Safety and Quality, you will lead our team of 60+ specialists and multi-discipline professionals, ensuring they drive quality, safety, and performance across our sectors:

  • Transportation
  • Social Infrastructure
  • Environment & Water
  • Energy & Defence
  • Built Environment

You will steward growth in this senior leadership position within Specialist Advisory Services, integrating Health, Safety, and Quality teams. Responsibilities include merging teams, leading strategy, delivering cross-sector services, and driving revenue opportunities.

Key strategic actions include:

  • Developing forward-thinking growth plans for the Quality and Safety team, ensuring strong alignment with broader APD offerings.
  • Team leadership of a diverse workforce, supporting career development, skill planning, and maximising team performance.
  • Resourcing & recruitment, ensuring a skilled workforce to meet current and future demand while minimising waste.
  • Daily project delivery engagement and oversight of internal processes.
  • Participation in sub-sector business impacts, including profitability targets from Health, Safety, and Quality opportunities.
  • Leading business development and work winning activities.
  • Delivering integrated Health, Safety, and Quality solutions internally and for external APD clients, setting internal expertise benchmarks.
  • Governing best-practice delivery in Quality and Safety Management and ambassadorship to promote our reputation as industry leaders.

Key Accountabilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement a strategic direction and growth plan for Health/Safety/Quality that supports Specialist Advisory Portfolio goals.
  • Lead culture and ethos, driving high performance and cohesive team delivery.

Team Management

  • Lead a team of 60+ people across sectors, ensuring expertise matrix optimization.
  • Manage resource allocation, career progression, and talent retention.
  • Enhance wellbeing initiatives, career mapping, and L&D support systems.

People Strategy & Growth

  • Oversee high-quality recruitment, minimising downtime and ensuring talent pipelines.
  • Balance workloads while fostering sectoral and cross-sector collaboration to unlock opportunities.
  • Achieve sectorial revenue and profit targets by leveraging Health/Safety/Quality strengths.

Client Partnerships & Development

  • Internal project delivery partner, ensuring alignment with client needs.
  • Develop Health/Safety/Quality offerings for APD clients, including both internal teams and external engagements.
  • Proactively drive business development, winning contracts and enhancing Mott MacDonald’s perception.

Quality & Safeguarding Governance

  • Champion best-practice delivery in Quality Safety Management.
  • Inspire high performance through cross-sector knowledge transfer.
  • Promote Mott MacDonald’s values externally through industry engagement and forums.

Requirements

Essential Experience & Capabilities

  • Chartered professional with a degree and chartership accredited to relevant bodies.
  • Charismatic leadership with a proven ability to establish new teams, create strong cultures, and drive exceptional performance.
  • Tactical and strategic business acumen, combined with a market vision for opportunity maximisation.
  • Holistic commercialel mindset—able to align interests, hiducate senior stakeholders, and sell Advisory services to stakeholders in a matrix organisation.
  • Effective client facing presence, relationship builder, and negotiator.
  • Accountable for driving profitability and high-value client outcomes.
  • Matrix/consultancy-collaborative skills, using influencing, collective decision-making, and agile coping to navigate challenges.
  • Exceptional internal & external communication—able to engage, inspire, and influence at all levels.
