About the Role
Octopus was founded with a mission to use technology to accelerate us toward a low-carbon future. That’s why we created Kraken—our own technology platform, built from scratch—now serving over 70 million households, and a key reason why Octopus is the number one energy supplier in the UK.
We have been using GenAI in live, customer-facing environments since 2022, including one system that generates tens of thousands of high-quality emails for our Energy Specialists, merging our deep energy industry knowledge with customer-specific data from Kraken and our unique Octo communication style.
We’re seeking an experienced AI Lead to escalate GenAI adoption, crafting and executing a broader AI strategy to position us as tech innovators in the energy sector. Initially, this role will require hands-on building and collaboration, while expanding a capable AI team around you.
You’ll drive the development of solutions that truly advance Net Zero objectives in a company passionate about energy-tech innovation.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Lead the design, development, and deployment of production-grade agentic workflows and multi-model architectures
- Stay ahead of emerging AI and machine learning trends to ensure technological leadership
- Oversee technical architecture, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security of AI systems
- Drive LLMOps best practices, focusing on:
- Model evaluation
- Hallucination mitigation
- Data privacy
- Token cost optimisation

Strategic Management
- Develop and execute an AI strategy roadmap, aligning with company-wide goals in collaboration with tech and strategy teams
- Identify and manage strategic partnerships with technology vendors, research labs, and other stakeholders
- Evaluate and integrate third-party AI services as needed
- Translate complex AI concepts to non-technical stakeholders for informed decision-making
Team Development & Delivery
- Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing AI team
- Oversee planning, execution, and delivery of strategic AI projects
- Ensure technical foundations of AI solutions are robust, scalable, and maintainable
Ideal Candidate Profile
Hands-on GenAI Builder
- Experience transitioning GenAI systems from proof-of-concept to production with measurable impact
- Deep technical aptitude to solve AI-centric problems and hands-on build as needed
- *Note: Past experience could be from transforming enterprise products or scaling innovations in a *fast-paced startup environment
Exceptional Leader
- Proven leadership, managing and shaping a portfolio of high-achieving AI teams
- Product-focused mindset to translate complex AI capabilities into user-friendly experiences
- Bilingual capabilities: Ability to bridge technical execution gaps for developers and transmit nuanced insights to non-technical stakeholders (bonafide bonus: conference speaker status appreciated!)
