About the Role
Octopus was founded with a mission to use technology to accelerate a low-carbon future. That’s why they created Kraken—their own technology platform, serving over 70 million households, and a core reason why Octopus is the number one energy supplier in the UK.
They’ve already been using Generative AI in live, customer-facing environments since 2022, including a system generating tens of thousands of high-quality emails for their Energy Specialists. Combining deep domain knowledge of the energy industry and personalised data from Kraken, their AI enhances the Octo communication style with precision.
Join Us as AI Lead
You’ll work at the forefront of technology to deliver ambitious Net Zero goals. As AI Lead, you’ll start as a hands-on builder and establish a team to elevate their strategic AI objectives, ensuring they keep leading tech innovation in the energy space.
What You’ll Do
Technical Leadership
- Lead the design, development, and deployment of production-grade agentic workflows and multi-model architectures
- Stay updated on the latest advancements in AI and machine learning, keeping them at the technology frontier
- Oversee technical architecture, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security of AI systems
- Promote LLMOps best practices, focusing on:
- Model evaluation
- Hallucination mitigation
- Data privacy
- Token cost optimisation

Strategic Management
- Develop and execute a strategic roadmap for AI initiatives aligned with company goals, closely with their technology and strategy teams
- Identify and manage strategic partnerships with:
- Technology providers
- Research labs
- Key stakeholders
- Evaluate and integrate third-party AI services and solutions when required
- Translate complex AI concepts to non-technical stakeholders for alignment
Team Development & Delivery
- Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing AI team
- Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of strategic AI projects
- Ensure robust foundations for their AI solutions
Ideal Candidate Requirements
Hands-on GenAI Experience
- Experience transitioning GenAI from proof-of-concept stages to production-grade systems that drive measurable impact
- A deep technical understanding of the challenges being solved, balancing strategy with hands-on delivery
- Prior experience could range from building transformational products at an enterprise to launching cutting-edge tech at a startup
Exceptional Leadership
- Proven leadership record, with expertise in managing and developing high-performing teams
- A product-focused mindset, translating complex AI capabilities into user-friendly solutions, with a track record in tool development leadership
- Ability to:
- Engage hands-on with developers
- Simplify technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders
- (Bonus) Enjoy giving technical conference talks
