Head of IT – Biotech / Life Sciences

Location: Liverpool or London – hybrid working

Contract: Permanent, full-time

Reporting to: Chief Operating Officer

Have you built or transformed IT infrastructure within a regulated organisation? Are you ready to create an IT function from the ground up and shape how technology supports scientific discovery?

Guilford Street Laboratories is looking for a hands-on Head of IT to establish and lead our technology function as we enter our next phase of growth.

The role

The Head of IT is a newly created role and a pivotal hire for Guilford Street Laboratories. You will be responsible for establishing, leading, and running the organisation's IT function from the ground up — defining strategy, procuring and implementing infrastructure, and ensuring our systems and data are secure, compliant, and fit for a regulated life sciences environment.

This is a hands-on leadership role. In the near term, you will be the primary practitioner; over time, you will recruit and develop a small team around you. You will work closely with scientific, operational, and commercial colleagues to ensure technology actively enables the business.

Key responsibilities

  • Define and deliver the IT strategy, roadmap, and budget
  • Build the IT function, including policies, processes, and service standards
  • Design and implement networks, cloud platforms, servers, devices, and communications systems
  • Manage Microsoft 365, Azure AD, and wider cloud-based services
  • Establish an effective IT service desk and provide hands-on technical support
  • Develop cybersecurity, data protection, and information security frameworks
  • Support UK GDPR, ISO 27001, GxP, and other relevant regulatory requirements
  • Lead business continuity, disaster recovery, patching, and vulnerability management
  • Select and implement systems such as ERP, CRM, HR, and collaboration platforms
  • Support laboratory systems, scientific software, LIMS, and electronic lab notebooks
  • Enable the secure integration of laboratory instruments and data acquisition systems
  • Develop an effective data architecture and governance framework
  • Manage technology suppliers, outsourced providers, and commercial agreements
  • Recruit and lead future IT team members

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
