Head of IT
Location: Cambridge
Salary: £55–60k
Contract: Full-time, permanent
We are looking for an experienced Head of IT to oversee the operational management, technical development, and continuous improvement of IT services in a dynamic working environment.
This position is an executive, hands-on leadership role, carrying responsibility for maintaining secure, resilient, and well-documented IT infrastructure, systems, support, and processes that align with organisational goals. The ideal candidate will seamlessly combine deep technical expertise with strong team management, service improvement, project coordination, and clear communication with senior leadership.
You will lead the IT Services team, offer strategic technical guidance across IT operations, and ensure dependable support for staff and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the day-to-day operation of IT Services, ensuring that support is efficient, timely, user-focused, and aligned with organisational priorities.
- Manage and develop the IT Services team through workload planning, regular team meetings, mentoring, coaching, and performance evaluations.
- Provide senior technical leadership across networking, virtualisation, Wi-Fi, servers, storage, Microsoft 365, endpoint management, and other critical systems.
- Serve as the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) for infrastructure, security controls, service resilience, business continuity, and crisis recovery planning.
- Maintain IT risk registers, audits, risk assessments, and service reviews to identify vulnerabilities, ensuring robust systems, processes, and controls.
- Ensure all technical procedures, operating processes, support frameworks, and key systems are clearly documented and kept current.
- Oversee routine maintenance activities, including backups, updates, patching, monitoring, access controls, and account management.
- Manage SQL server environments, including upgrades, access control, security, and backup arrangements.
- Contribute technical expertise to cross-functional projects, assessing IT risks, dependencies, and resource requirements upfront.
- Translate complex technical issues into simple, actionable advice for senior leaders, detailing options, costs, benefits, risks, and recommendations.
- Lead IT budgeting, capital bids, vendor management, and contract negotiations.
- Develop and maintain a 3–5 year technical roadmap, outlining infrastructure improvements, IT lifecycle planning, security enhancements, and operational advancements.
- Oversee hardware, software, network systems, Active Directory, Group Policy, device management, and departmental software deployment.
- Manage internal penetration testing, ensuring vulnerabilities are properly investigated and mitigated.
- Support access control systems, including maintenance, permissions, troubleshooting, reporting, and security monitoring.
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies, infrastructure trends, and cybersecurity risks.
- Identify opportunities to integrate AI-powered technologies to bolster operational efficiency, service delivery, and security.

Required Skills & Experience
✅ Proven experience leading or supervising an IT team, including scope delegation, talent development, and performance management. ✅ Strong hands-on technical background in IT infrastructure, support, systems and networks. ✅ Experience designing, installing, and configuring networks, including wireless solutions, firewalls, core routing, and VLANs. ✅ Experience with virtualisation, with preference for Hyper-V administered environments. ✅ In-depth knowledge of Microsoft desktop and server technologies, including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Exchange, clustering, failover clusters, and high availability designs. ✅ Strong networking expertise, covering IP addressing, VLAN segmentation, routing protocols, failover technologies, ACLs, and protocols like TCP, UDP, HTTPS, SSL, and TLS. ✅ Solid understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals—controls, methodologies, and compliance standards (BCP, ISO 27001, NIST, etc.). ✅ Technical proficiency with firewalls, disaster recovery, wireless technologies, backup systems, and monitoring tools (e.g. PRTG, Nagios, SolarWinds). ✅ Expertise in Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and OneDrive administration and troubleshooting. ✅ Ability to create clear, authoritative documentation, including audit trails, engineering guides, and formal technical records.

Desirable Experience
🔹 Earned qualifications or certifications in Microsoft (e.g. Microsoft Certified: Enterprise Admin), Cisco (CCNP/Cisco Enterprise Specialisations), HPE (NetGuy) or equivalent VMware, SUSE SCA. 🔹 Direct work experience with AI-enabled tools or initiatives in IT Service Management, security, or operations automation. 🔹 Knowledge of Apple macOS/Linux environments, IP telephony, SAN/NAS systems, PowerShell scripting, or technical troubleshooting. 🔹 Familiarity with mobile device management (Apple Configurator, Intune, MDM platforms). 🔹 Experience integrating SIEM (e.g. Splunk, QRadar) and logging solutions (e.g. Syslog, ELK).
