Head of Learning, GUY'S & ST THOMAS FOUNDATION
Head of Learning
The Head of Learning oversees cross-programme and innovation learning for Impact on Urban Health (IoUH), in partnership with the Director of Innovation and the Head of Data & Evaluation, supported by Evaluation & Learning Managers.
Key Responsibilities
Impact on Urban Health
- Oversee IoUH’s approach to learning, establishing clear processes for synthesising learning from:
- Funded projects
- Related work on urban health
- Utilise reports & evaluations produced under the leadership of the Head of Data & Evaluation to:
- Create synthesised evidence on impact and lessons from IoUH-funded projects
- Oversee the production of:
- Urban health learning reporting and synthesis
- A repository of evidence on effective urban health interventions
- Accessible summaries of available evidence
- Collaborate with:
- Head of Data & Evaluation
- Director of Programmes
- Heads of Programmes to synthesise urban health learning across four themed programmes
- Oversee learning and impact reporting for:
- Innovation portfolio (in partnership with Director of Innovation)
- Oversee development and delivery of the:
- Implementation plan for strategic-level learning across the Innovation function (with Director of Innovation)
- Lead exploration and development of:
- Internal learning and knowledge management systems for IoUH
- Oversee evaluation and learning support for:
- Cross-programme and innovation projects
- Ensure evaluation and learning activities:
- Align with strategic objectives
- Build on existing knowledge
- Are equitable and inclusive
- Manage programme-level evaluation budget for:
- Cross-programme and innovation projects

Data, Evaluation & Learning Team Responsibilities
- Line manage the Evaluation & Learning Manager
- Develop expertise in urban health evidence
- Provide thought leadership through:
- Blogs
- Speaking at events
- Champion a culture of learning, reflection, and evidence-based decision-making
- Deputise for the Director of Data, Evaluation & Learning where appropriate
Note: Role responsibilities are not exhaustive; candidates will take on wider tasks commensurate with the position.
Skills, Abilities, and Attributes
- Technical expertise in research and evaluation methods (qualitative & quantitative)
- Ability to critically appraise research methods and data sources
- Strong project management skills
- Excellent communication abilities, especially in simplifying complex information
- Outstanding leadership and organisational skills (including leading leaders)
- Proficiency in budget and risk management
- Problem-solving skills with an outcome-focused approach
- Thematic expertise in areas such as:
- Children’s Health and Food
- Children’s Mental Health
- Health Effects of Air Pollution
- Multiple Long-Term Conditions

Knowledge, Experience, and Qualifications
- Experience overseeing large-scale, multi-million-pound programmes
- Leadership experience in:
- Team development
- Cross-departmental collaboration
- Multipoint project management
- Committed to embedding DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) into workflows
- Ability to navigate complexity and uncertainty
- Advanced degree or equivalent, preferably in a multi-disciplinary, evaluation-focused field
