Head of Legal & Compliance – CPaaS (Communications Platform as a Service)

About the Role
Commify is a high-growth CPaaS provider operating at the intersection of telecommunications, software, and data. This role requires a global legal leader who can navigate international telecoms law, data privacy, and multi-jurisdictional compliance while enabling commercial expansion.
You’ll work alongside some of the brightest minds in telecoms and tech, driving compliance, mitigating risk, and supporting an active growth strategy. Together, we’ll help businesses communicate with their customers in new and smarter ways.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Strategy & Leadership
- Act as the primary legal advisor to the Executive Team and Board on global corporate matters, including:
- Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A)
- Equity raises
- Corporate governance
- Lead, mentor, and scale a lean, agile legal and compliance function to support international expansion
- Manage external counsel spend and relationships across EMEA, APAC, and AMER, ensuring cost-effective, high-quality legal support
Commercial & Technology Contracts
- Oversee complex international agreements, including:
- Master Service Agreements (MSAs)
- Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
- Carrier and enterprise partnership contracts
- Advise on intellectual property (IP) protection and licensing for proprietary software, APIs, and digital solutions
- Streamline the sales-legal lifecycle using automated contract management tools to accelerate deal flow while ensuring compliance

Regulatory & Telecoms Compliance
- Navigate global telecommunications regulations, including:
- UK Ofcom (OFCOM)
- US FCC (Federal Communications Commission)
- Equivalent bodies in EMEA, APAC, and AMER
- Ensure adherence to quirks, regulations, and evolving "Know Your Customer" (KYC) and "Know Your Content" requirements to combat platform fraud and phishing
- Oversee compliance with numbering resource allocation, SMS/voice laws, and telecom-specific obligations
Data Privacy & Security
- Serve as (or oversee) the Data Protection Officer (DPO), ensuring compliance with:
- UK GDPR
- EU GDPR
- Global privacy frameworks (CCPA, CPRA, etc.)
- Work closely with the CTO to embed "Privacy by Design" principles in product development
- Maintain robust data processing agreements (DPAs) and conduct regular privacy impact assessments
Risk Management & Ethics
- Develop and enforce global compliance policies, including:
- Anti-Bribery & Corruption (ABC)
- Anti-Money Laundering (AML)
- Modern slavery statements
- Oversee any litigation, disputes, or regulatory inquiries, minimising brand and financial exposure
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- Fully qualified solicitor with professional recognition in England & Wales
- 25+ years of post-qualification experience with a proven track record in high-value transactional, Corp Fin, and commercial law work
- Strong ability to delegate, mentor, and drive results across under-resourced legal teams
- Recognised as a strategic, commercially minded legal advisor with a proven history of partnering with business teams
Sector Expertise
- Essential: 5+ years of experience in a CPaaS, SaaS, or Telecoms sector, with deep understanding of:
- International telecoms law, digital service regulations, and global messaging frameworks
- API-based services and cross-border message/voice routing challenges
- Data privacy laws across the US, EU, and other key markets
- Carrier and enterprise contract negotiations (MSA, SLAs)
- Preferred: Experience with Regional Telecommunication Oversight Agencies (e.g., Ofcom, FCC, BeNE/ACA in Australia)
