The Contingency team underwrites a diverse global portfolio including event cancellation, film & television, parametric weather, non-appearance, terrorism, and political risk. The individual will have primary responsibility and take the lead role for the Contingency portfolio across the London market, whilst also helping to build out the international broker network including the group collaborations with Tokio Marine. They will also provide technical and strategic direction across the Contingency portfolio, while developing strong broker and market relationships and ensuring alignment with governance, compliance, and reinsurance requirements.
Job Purpose:
To lead the strategic growth and technical authority for the London market Contingency portfolio, ensuring profitable growth, disciplined risk selection, robust policy wordings, effective reinsurance support, and strong broker relationships.
Key Responsibilities:

Underwriting Contingency Portfolio:
- Technical pricing of Contingency risks including for Event Cancellation, Non-Appearance, Prize Indemnity, Parametric Weather, and other miscellaneous contingent risks.
- Focus on servicing brokers in London market, international broker network, and TM offices globally.
- Support efficient placement of risks utilizing Specialty Marketplace – assist the evolution of the portal to react to broker needs in terms of product development.

People Leadership & Team Oversight:
- Manage and support development of underwriting capability, technical standards, and consistent underwriting practices of London Contingency team.
- Contribute to performance management, coaching, and mentoring within the team.

Reinsurance:
- Provide oversight and technical input into Contingency reinsurance arrangements, including treaty structures, facultative placements, autofacs, and renewals.
- Support discussions around exposure, and aggregation with reinsurance partners and internal stakeholders.
- Work closely with Reinsurance, Compliance, and Senior Management to ensure appropriate risk transfer and capital protection.

Policy Wording & Technical Governance:
- Lead the drafting, review, and approval of policy wordings, endorsements, and exclusions for Contingency risks.
- Help resolve technical, legal, and jurisdictional issues where required.
- Ensure policy documentation is consistent, legally robust, and aligned with market practice and regulatory requirements.
- Act as escalation point for wording disputes, interpretation issues, and complex coverage questions.

Exposure Management & Aggregation:
- Oversee monitoring and management of accumulation and aggregation risk within the Contingency portfolio.
- Review exposure reports relating to geography, peril, and event concentration, including politically sensitive regions.
- Support internal and external reporting requirements relating to aggregate exposure and risk position.
- Ensure underwriting decisions appropriately reflect exposure limits and aggregation controls.

Broker & Market Relationship Management:
- Act as lead point of contact for key brokers and market partner in London market.
- Communicate underwriting appetite, coverage positions, and market stance clearly and consistently.
- Maintain strong market presence and contribute to the firm’s reputation as a leading insurer of Contingency risks.

Cross-Functional & Senior Stakeholder Engagement:
- Work closely with Compliance, Finance, Catastrophe Modelling, Reinsurance, and Operations teams to support underwriting activity.
- Respond to senior management queries relating to underwriting decisions, exposure, and portfolio performance.
- Support governance processes, internal audits, and regulatory interactions as required.
- Contribute to internal initiatives aimed at improving underwriting discipline, efficiency, and controls.

Skills and Experience Specification:
Essential:
- London Market Experience
- Degree level education (Ideally business or economics) and strong numeracy
- Well-developed IT skills
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
- Ability to work well within a team and build strong relationships with colleagues and clients
- Willingness to learn and work proactively
Desirable:
- 5+ years experience in Contingency
- A level Maths (or equivalent)
