Head of Maintenance – Care Home (Barchester)
About the Role
As a Head of Maintenance at a Barchester care home, you’ll ensure our environment remains clean, well-maintained, and welcoming—so residents feel at home and staff can operate effectively. Your role offers great variety, as you’ll carry out diverse tasks including:
- Property maintenance within the care home building
- Gardening and grounds-keeping (e.g., fixing leaks, installing new lights, or planting)
- Working independently, leading a maintenance team
- Supporting the General Manager with annual budget planning
- Liaising with contractors for tasks beyond your team’s expertise

Your core focus will be on the wellbeing of residents. As Head of Maintenance, you’ll ensure all maintenance work is carried out with sensitivity to their needs.
Essential Requirements:
- Hands-on experience in property maintenance (e.g., plumbing, electrical, carpentry)
- A trade skill (one or more) to enable direct technical work
- Ability to effectively plan, organise, and execute a wide range of maintenance tasks
- Reliability and flexibility in working hours
- A full UK driving licence (essential for site visits and outreach)
- IT literacy (must be proficient with standard office software)
- GCSEs in Maths and English, or equivalent qualifications
Bonus Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to lead a maintenance team while adapting to unexpected challenges
- Experience working within a healthcare or care home environment
