Head of Millstream Marine & Senior Underwriter

Location: London

Salary: Negotiable

Reports To: Head of Aviation, Space and Marine

Job Summary

The Head of Marine Underwriting is primarily responsible for setting the strategy, securing the capital and leading the underwriting of Millstream marine business on behalf of B&B Europe through their chosen platforms. Also responsible to B&B, Underwriting capacity and other stakeholders for the management of Binder(s) and the daily management of the MM business.

Principal Duties / Responsibilities

  • The professional operation of the MM business in line with the agreed strategy and plan
  • Securing and retaining underwriting capital
  • Developing the MM business in line with the strategic requirements of the company
  • Recruiting, retaining, leading and developing the MM team
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with Clients, brokers and capacity providers
  • Representing B&B / MM / Nexus Underwriting to external stakeholders

Underwriting

  • Develop, implement and maintain processes for risk analysis and the underwriting of business in line with agreed business strategies
  • Determine whether to provide cover and at what price in line with established processes and in the best interests of the Agency, capacity providers and other stakeholders
  • Liaise and negotiate with brokers to secure new and renewal business
  • Ensure business activities are performed in compliance with BAAs and wider market regulations
  • Manage the claims process from initial advice to settlement and make recommendations to capacity providers and brokers

Strategic Development

  • Agree the strategic approach to the marine business with senior management
  • Agree and implement business plans and regularly and clearly report on achievement against plan
  • Maximise revenues against plan while operating to agreed expenditure budgets
  • Take all reasonable steps to deliver the agreed plan and monitor and report risks and issues effecting the delivery
  • Work with binder / reinsurance brokers to maintain sufficient underwriting capacity to deliver the business plan targets
  • Contribute to developing and delivering the strategy and development of the wider business

Leading the team

  • Ensure the efficient operation of the team in delivering high quality service to brokers and capacity providers
  • Attract and retain talented team mates
  • Manage the MM team and encourage their ongoing development

Stakeholder management

  • Conduct business relationships in a professional manner conducive with the values of the company
  • Build productive working relationships with the other members of the B&B / Nexus Underwriting team
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with brokers and distribution partners
  • Interface with and work in the best interest of capacity providers and key investors
  • Represent the company to the Industry, regulators, clients and other related stakeholders

Skills required

  • In-depth understanding of the operation of the (re)insurance markets and Marine sector
  • In-depth understanding of the underwriting process
  • Knowledge of market wordings and clauses
  • Strong client liaison and business development skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team
  • General knowledge of business operations and administration
  • Analytical thinking and numeracy
  • Negotiation skills
