Newham is a borough of opportunity, diversity and ambition. We are seeking an experienced, politically astute and highly motivated Head of Mayor's Office to lead the team that supports the Mayor and Cabinet in delivering priorities for residents. The role provides strategic leadership to the Mayor's Office, ensuring the Mayor and Cabinet receive first-class support, briefing and coordination to enable effective political leadership across the borough.
This is a high-profile role at the centre of the Council, working closely with the Mayor, Cabinet Members, the Chief Executive's Office, the Corporate Leadership Team and services across the organisation. You will ensure that Mayoral priorities are translated into action, decision-making is effectively supported, and the Mayor is fully briefed, informed and connected to the issues that matter most to Newham residents.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the Mayor's Office, providing professional and comprehensive support to the Mayor and Cabinet Members.
- Provide strategic policy and administrative advice to the Mayor and oversee the commissioning of work on the Mayor's behalf.
- Ensure the Mayor is fully briefed and prepared for meetings, engagements and key decision-making forums.
- Oversee the management of mayoral correspondence, casework and enquiries, ensuring a responsive and resident-focused service.
- Develop strong working relationships across the organisation, supporting effective collaboration between the Mayor's Office, Cabinet Members, Chief Executive's Office and council services.
- Lead, motivate and develop a high-performing team, embedding continuous improvement and excellent service standards.

Qualifications
- Understands the relationship between politics and administration and can work effectively in a politically sensitive environment.
- Has experience of leading teams and developing high-quality support services.
- Demonstrates excellent judgement, diplomacy and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters.
- Is an outstanding communicator with strong influencing and relationship-building skills.
- Can lead service improvements and design innovative approaches that enhance effectiveness and outcomes.
